Consultant in Emergency Medicine with a special interest

Our Consultants currently work a rota that is based on a 12 PA job plan, encompassing rotating shifts through the week to ensure on site Consultant cover between 8am to 10.00pm on weekdays and a one in seven weekend commitment ensuring 8 hours of onsite Consultant cover at the weekends. The job plan agreed with existing consultants has a very favorable working pattern with shifts varying between 7 and 9 hours each day. PA’s are calculated at 3hrs per PA for hours worked by Consultant during 1900-2200 weekdays and all weekend hours. Weekly rota includes a day off during the week (Mon-Fri)
The standard 10 PA job plan would include 7.5 DCC and 2.5 SPA as per National terms and conditions. Consultants opting to work as 12 PA job plan are provided with a total of 3 SPA and 9 DCC sessions per week. 1 of the SPA’s are allocated for special interest development off site. Our current special interest consultants have 2 - 4 PAs dedicated to their special interest (i.e. critical care / PHEM /PEM). We aspire to expand our pool of special interest consultant to widen our departmental expertise.

Our departments are very closely linked with acute medicine, frailty service, Paediatric, intensive care team and KSS Air ambulance, a job plan across different specialties is feasible.

We are a leading Trust for use of technology. We are introducing electronic bed management and benefit from real-time reporting of up-to-date information for every patient, plus point of care testing. We have a specialist intravenous access team within in our emergency departments.
The Trust has 24/7 access to CT and stroke thrombolysis, and benefits from interventional radiology services in our sister hospital at Canterbury. The Emergency Department at the William Harvey Hospital is an accredited Trauma Unit and the regional pPCI centre. The trust is one of the highest performing trusts in the UK (TARN data), and part of the South East London, Kent and Medway (SELKaM) Trauma Network. Both the QEQM and WHH use the SELKaM Trauma Unit protocols and have newly refurbished Resuscitation Rooms which enable continuity for clinicians to work safely between sites. These are highly motivated and focused departments, which prides itself on delivering the highest standards of safe patient care. Clinical governance is central to all that we do; ensuring that patient care, safety and quality are the highest priority.
We have recently secured £6.42m in national funding for new observation wards at both departments and are investing significantly in medical, nursing and support staff throughout the emergency floor, including specialist paediatric nursing. As a result, an exciting opportunity has arisen for a Consultant in Emergency Medicine to join our dynamic and innovative Emergency Medicine team that are passionate about ‘making a difference’ every day. The posts offer a unique opportunity for successful applicants to be actively engaged in service design and innovation.
We firmly believe that developing our staff is key to success; we have a dynamic and progressive training and development ethos, which includes sessions for sub-speciality interests in other departments or Trusts (e.g. simulation, HEMS, Paediatric, Acute medicine, etc), time and funding for MBA, MSc or other qualifications. Time for internal/external research and teaching (especially ALS, APLS, ATLS). At EKHUFT we will support you with your individual clinical interests to help you reach your full potential!
The departments are in the second year of a 3 year programme to implement the Advanced Clinical Practitioner role and our Consultants are a pivotal part of that development, providing clinical supervision and mentorship to the trainees. Additionally we offer a development programme for aspiring Consultants and would welcome applications from candidates with experience of supervising developing doctors and/or are looking to become FRCEM/MRCEM Examiners.
We are currently developing the research activities of the departments and are involved in NIHR projects. We would value applicants with previous or current research experience.
We have ambitions to reach a 10 Consultant rota to deliver Emergency Medicine at each of our two A&E’s at the William Harvey Hospital (WHH) in Ashford and the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother Hospital (QEQM) in Margate, as part of the Trust’s Improvement Journey and emerging Clinical Strategy over the next 3-5 years.
The Consultant rota is supported by at 25 Doctor Middle Grade rota at each site in addition to the Doctors in Training. We are allocated 2 HST trainees in addition to 4 ACCS doctors from the deanery per year. In addition we have a number of special interest fellows and FY2/GP trainees.
A medical school will be opening in east Kent in 2020, the first in the country. The school will offer 100 medical school training places per year, this is a game-changing opportunity and one which the two universities and Kent and Medway trusts have been working towards and hoping for over several years.
