Bloomfield Health Services provide a spectrum of neuropsychiatric services to adults with a range of serious and enduring mental health issues and neuropsychiatric disorders such as Alzheimer`s disease, Schizophrenia, Parkinson`s and Huntington`s Diseases. As a teaching hospital affiliated with Trinity College, Dublin, and engaging in transnational research programmes through, amongst others, the European JPND (Joint Programme Neurogenerative Disease Research), Bloomfield is committed to being a leader in providing best practice in the treatment and care of a range of severe and enduring mental health conditions. A specialist inpatient rehabilitation mental health service has recently been developed to as a component of the range of neuropsychiatric mental health services provided by Bloomfield Health Services in collaboration with the HSE mental health services.  

The Specialised Mental Health Rehabilitation Programme at Bloomfield Mental Health Service is a person centred service designed to assist individuals with severe and enduring mental illness and complex needs who have had prolonged periods of hospital admissions to acute mental health services and who have found it difficult to progress back towards community living.  There is a focus on creating a therapeutic milieu utilising recovery oriented clinical practices and therapeutic interventions which are evidence based to enable and support patients to progress on towards community living with support depending on their individual needs.  The Specialist Rehabilitation Unit has 15 inpatient beds and the Continuing Care Unit has 15 inpatient beds. 

Bloomfield Health Services are inviting applications for the position of a Consultant in General Adult Psychiatry with a Special Interest in Rehabilitation Psychiatry for a permanent full-time role. 

The Consultant Psychiatrist role will be to lead and develop a multi-disciplinary team to support the Specialised Mental Health Rehabilitation Programme and to provide continuing care to our residents with severe and enduring mental illness in Bloomfield Hospital.

The post will service Bloomfield Health Services to lead and develop a multidisciplinary clinical team in the inpatient specialist rehabilitation psychosis service and will work closely with the existing neuropsychiatry services in Bloomfield Health Services to provide in-patient mental health services for adults with severe and enduring mental illness and complex needs. Referrals are accepted to Bloomfield Hospital nationally.  There is an overlap in the care of inpatients and cross cover for leave.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Overall responsibility for the provision of the services of a Psychiatrist to patients and residents and for the purpose of regulatory compliance.
  • There is an overlap in the care of inpatients and cross cover for leave.
  • Support the continued development of Clinical Governance and to assist in the implementation of the strategic and operational plans of Bloomfield Health Services.
  • Provision by Bloomfield Health Services of Clinical Services within a legally compliant framework.
  • Efficient, effective and economic provision of clinical services within a defined budgetary framework.
  • Provision of teaching, research and academic support at a senior level as developed at associated educational facilities, e.g. Trinity College Dublin

Reporting Relationship

The post holder will report to the Clinical Director and will work closely with the Clinical Director of the Bloomfield Health Services to ensure provision of a comprehensive and responsive service.

Additional Information:

The post is based on a 37 hour working week and an on call commitment will be delivered to the service.  

The successful candidates will meet the following requirements: 

  • Full registration in the Specialist Register (Psychiatrist) of Medical Practitioners. maintained by the Medical Council in Ireland or entitlement to be so registered. 
  • Seven years post-graduation experience.
  • Registered as a general adult psychiatrist with a sub specialised interest in either rehabilitation psychiatry or neuropsychiatry desirable.
  • Have a management level or position of additional responsibility to their clinical area.
  • Demonstrate an ability to lead change and to develop clinical services.
  • Energetic individual with solid clinical experience in working with a team of diverse clinicians and strong knowledge of the concepts and operation of Clinical Governance.
  • Strong ability to teach, manage, participate and play a key role in the practice education of medical students, medical staff, nursing and other professions and promote and engage in the teaching/training/support of others as appropriate. 
  • Have a good knowledge and experience of health, safety and other statutory regulations affecting a healthcare organisation. 
  • Ability to deliver core contracted hours and to undertake on call as a member of a rota.

Bloomfield Health Services is an independent not for profit healthcare provider located at the foot of the Dublin Mountains at Stocking Lane in Rathfarnham Dublin 16. It commenced its service provision in 1812 and was originally located in Donnybrook Dublin 4 until 2005 when it moved to its current location which provides a state of the art environment for the care and treatment of its patients and residents. Bloomfield Health Services is owned by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) and is based on their ethos and principles.

The Centre at Rathfarnham consists of two services:

Bloomfield Mental Health Service

This is a 114 bed in patient Mental Health service, registered as an approved centre with the Mental Health Commission. Bloomfield Mental Health Services provides specialist Neuropsychiatric assessment and continuing care services for individuals with complex mental health needs on a national basis and also specialises in the provision of mental health services to adults and older persons with serious and enduring mental health needs. We also provide specialist palliative care to individuals with mental health needs. 
Registered as an approved centre with the Mental Health Commission, Bloomfield Mental Health Services continues to develop its leadership role in innovative and effective treatment programmes for its patients. Referrals are accepted nationally. While providing excellence in clinical treatment and care to patients and their families, we are committed to training healthcare professionals and to conducting clinical research designed to enhance treatment programmes for the continued improvement of outcomes for patients and residents and the overall enhancement of their quality of life. We have formal academic links with Trinity College Dublin.

New Lodge Nursing Home

This service is a 36 bed Nursing Home, registered with the Health Information & Quality Authority. It provides for excellence in delivery of care and treatment to frail Older Persons and Adults in comfortable and well-designed environment.
