Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, Bristol

We are looking for full time (10 PA) Consultants in Paediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) to start as soon as possible in the Children’s Emergency Department at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. This post represents a strong commitment from the Division to develop the Children’s Emergency department team and enhance both departmental cover and working patterns for the existing team.

Our department has undergone significant growth in the last 12 months and this represents an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic paediatric emergency physician. Applicants with interests in safeguarding, paediatric and adolescent mental health and quality improvement in particular would complement the existing team.

The post holder(s) will work as part of a 9.6 whole time equivalent Consultant team (10.6 when one of our substantive consultants returns from sabbatical). Bristol Royal Hospital for Children’s (BRHC) Emergency Department provides emergency care for both local and regional populations as the hospital is a tertiary referral centre.

The hospital is also the designated regional Major Trauma Centre (MTC) for the South West with the PEM Consultant team acting as trauma team leaders. Additionally, the Emergency Department is responsible for the assessment of urgent GP referrals.

The 10 PA job plans include 6.5 fixed sessions of rostered shop floor clinical work with evening and weekend sessions. The on call commitment will be 1 in 10 (1:6 weekends) with prospective cover for the paediatric emergency department only.

Applicants should have a CCT or equivalent in General Paediatrics with a sub specialist interest in Emergency Paediatrics, or CCT in Emergency Medicine with a sub specialty interest in Paediatrics. There will be due consideration of part-time working and/or split posts arrangements with other departments.

The Trust has teaching status and is linked with the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England. The appointee will be required to reside not more than 30 minutes travel by road from BRHC, for on-call purposes. Experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices or equivalent is essential. The successful candidate will be employed under Terms & Conditions of Service for Consultants (England) 2003.
