Emergency Medicine/Rural Hospital Medicine Specialist
Timaru Hospital is formally classified as a Level 2 hospital with 135 beds offering a range of surgical, medical, obstetric, paediatric and mental health services. Despite (or maybe because of) our smaller size, we are considered to be a progressive hospital, open to new ideas and distributive leadership giving clinicians a real opportunity to make change and improvements.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are a 12 bed department, covering a wide range of emergency presentations, including trauma, with backup from inpatient teams including anaesthesia, paediatrics, mental health, surgical and internal medicine specialists. The ED team is a tight-knit group, consisting of
7.61 FTE SMO’s and a core of experienced and multi-skilled ED nurses.
The roster consists of 3 overlapping 9-hour shifts, (plus some degree of House Officer assistance). Considerable efforts are made to accommodate individual preferences while rostering. A major advantage here is the roster has NO night shift and NO afterhours ‘on-call’ requirement and operates on a 6-week cycle, thereby allowing a significant degree of predictability for planning one’s personal commitments and interests.
You will be offered a position based on the DHB/ASMS MECA terms and conditions, including a generous CME allowance. SCDHB has strong links with the University of Otago School of Medicine with opportunities for SMOs to become involved as Clinical Supervisors.
South Canterbury offers a lifestyle opportunity second to none: this is an easy place to live, family friendly, with instant access to an astounding array of outdoor activities.
The climate is great: hot summers, crisp winters, there is no long commute to work, great affordable properties, including lifestyle blocks, and educational facilities are superb with two internationally renowned Universities within two hours drive.
