The Trust is committed to providing high quality integrated health and social care for local people with mental health problems in South West London and more specialist mental health services for people throughout the UK.

Consultant Psychiatrist – Acute Adult Inpatients
(Three Posts)
Full-time 10 PAs

Acute & Urgent Care Service Line
Jupiter Ward, Springfield Hospital, London SW17
Lilacs and Ellis Wards, Tolworth Hospital, London KT6
10 programmed activities (PAs) per week.

We are a dynamic, financially stable mental health trust which has recently been rated ‘good’ by the CQC both overall and specifically for our acute and urgent care services. We are undertaking a Trustwide quality improvement programme involving all clinicians, which is already delivering results. We have invested in further improvements to our acute and urgent care services, including innovative Recovery Cafés for service users, a Psychiatric Decision Unit, and integrated Out of Hours services.

We are looking for three new substantive Consultant Psychiatrists to join the Acute & Urgent Care consultant body. One, on Ellis Ward, is a new post, arising because of service developments; the other two arise because of the retirement or movement of the existing consultant.

Ellis Ward will move in October into a new purpose-built 18-bed mixed-gender unit for working age adults at Tolworth Hospital (at present it is in temporary 12-bed accommodation for men only at Springfield Hospital). Despite being a relatively new service, it has a strong ethos and a good clinical team, including support from a full-time specialty doctor.

Jupiter Ward is a 22-bed ward specialising in the acute psychiatric care of men and women of working age. In 2021 it will move into new purpose-built accommodation at Springfield Hospital, having reduced to 21 beds later in 2019 and in stages to 18 beds by 2021. It has a well-established MDT, including junior doctors, and the Consultant works closely with the Merton Home Treatment Team Consultant and other clinicians. The Consultant will also have a close relationship with community team consultants based at Springfield Hospital and across the Trust.

Lilacs Ward is an 18-bed ward specialising in the acute psychiatric care of men and women of working age, which moved in January into a newly refurbished unit at Tolworth Hospital. It has a well-established MDT, including junior doctors, and the Consultant works closely with the Kingston Home Treatment Team Consultant and other clinicians. The Consultant will also have a close relationship with community team consultants based at Tolworth Hospital and across
the Trust.

On all wards, the postholder will provide clinical leadership to the team alongside the Ward Manager. There is the opportunity to become involved in redeveloping the pathway for men and women receiving acute and intensive psychiatric care in hospital, and for participating in the South London Partnership Adult Care Pathway Programme, a transformational programme moving away from a reactive, crisis-driven model to a predictive approach that forecasts and manages demand through effective use of all resources that exist in all three South London mental health trusts, with more integrated inpatient–community pathways and services.

If you are an experienced dynamic practitioner who would like to be part of these innovating and expanding services, we would like to hear from you. Please contact Dr Debbie Stephenson, Associate Clinical Director on 07595 413723 / deborah.stephenson@swlstg.nhs.uk or Dr Seán Whyte, Clinical Director on 07976 287232 / sean.whyte@swlstg.nhs.uk
