Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia

The Great Western Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is one of the biggest employers in the South West and we are proud to have a team of 5,200 highly skilled, kind and compassionate staff.  We are a high performing, ambitious and progressive Foundation Trust, committed to providing safe, effective and high quality healthcare to around 1.4 million people a year.

Applications are invited for a Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia to join the Critical Care and Anaesthetic Departments at the Great Western Hospital, Swindon.  A specialty interest in Intensive Care is essential. There is an opportunity for the successful candidate to get a broad spectrum of anaesthetic cases in keeping with a District General Hospital, and we actively encourage the development of a specialist anaesthetic interest.

The on call commitment will be in Intensive Care.

The successful candidate will join a team of 26 existing consultants, nine of whom provide on-call cover for the ICU, the rest the general on-call rota, 3 associate specialists, 12 specialty doctors and there are currently 20 trainees made up of ACCS trainees and both senior and junior anaesthetic trainees.

The Great Western Hospital opened in December 2002 with the Brunel Treatment Centre added in March 2005. This modern development includes fifteen operating theatres and a well-equipped Critical Care Unit comprising 12 single rooms, 8 of which are equipped for mechanical ventilation. There is a well established outreach service and a developing follow up clinic. A FICE training program has been established and an Intensive Care accredited Swindon Echocardiography course is run in the hospital twice a year.

The Great Western Hospital is an attractive modern building set on the outskirts of Swindon, which is set in the rolling hills of the Cotswolds to the North and West, the Upper Thames valley to the East, and the Marlborough Downs to the South. The Trust catchment population is currently 350,000 with an annual increase of around 10,000. The population of the borough of Swindon itself is around 200,000, and is projected to continue to grow rapidly in the next decade. Swindon is a thriving town whose economy is built on engineering, light industry and services. Neighbouring rural towns and villages are attractive and accessible and include Marlborough, Cirencester, and Malmesbury. There are outstanding local schools. There is virtually full local employment, and the highest level of coverage of private health insurance in the UK. Local sporting and golfing facilities are excellent, and there is a thriving local theatre and two large cinema complexes. Other cultural opportunities abound in London, Bristol and Oxford, all of which are within one hours travelling time by road and/or rail. The hospital has excellent on-site facilities such as nursery and purpose built accommodation. The Great Western Hospital benefits from progressive relationship between management teams and clinical staff.
