South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) has an exciting opportunity and is looking to recruit a dynamic and enthusiastic, full time, Substantive Consultant Psychiatrist to one of our well established acute female inpatient wards (Virginia Woolf ward) based at the Ladywell Unit in Lewisham. The ward is well established and the job has arisen due to previous post holder moving on. The post has been approved by the RCPsych and as stated, is a Substantive role.

This is an excellent time to join SLAM, as our trust has recently undergone reconfiguration around the operational management of adult mental health services to a borough based, localised structure. Whilst services are financially managed within local boroughs, the Clinical Academic Groups (CAGs) remain in place in this new reconfiguration as part of a new central Quality Centre, leading to design care pathways in line with the evidence base. Each Operations Directorate has a new management team structure with standardised roles across all the teams. Each structure will be led by a service director and a clinical director supported by a senior management team.

The post holder will be based at the Ladywell Unit in Lewisham. Virginia Woolf ward is a 16-bed female acute in-patient unit. It provides psychiatric care for women, aged 18-65, with acute mental health problems who live in the London Borough of Lewisham. There are two male wards, one other female ward, one male PICU and various community mental health services linked to the Unit including the Lewisham Liaison service and Lewisham home treatment team, thereby enabling close working between teams.

The post is full time (10 PA) with adequate time for SPA activities, subject to annual job planning. Both posts are supported by a Higher trainee and two junior doctors (1 CT and 1 GP VTS). The Higher trainee is shared with the Lewisham Home treatment team.

The trust is a part of King’s Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre (AHSC). KHP is responsible for seeing 2 million patients each year, has 25,000 employees and 19,500 students, and a £2 billion annual turnover. It brings together the best of basic and translational research, clinical excellence and world-class teaching to deliver ground-breaking advances in physical and mental healthcare. There are excellent opportunities for participating in service development, teaching, training, supervising and mentoring medical students and trainee doctors, participating in audit and quality improvement projects and getting involved in research. You will work very closely with your fellow in patient and other Lewisham consultants (many of who are based at the Ladywell unit) and be encouraged to participate in and be a part of the famous Maudsley Grand rounds and be an active member of the Lewisham MAC (Medical Advisory committee) where you will have the opportunity to regularly network with and seek support from your consultant colleagues.

It is a condition of your employment that you are, and remain a fully registered medical practitioner and are included on the Specialist Register for General Adult Psychiatry held by the General Medical Council (GMC), or are eligible for inclusion into the register within six months of your appointment and continue to hold a licence to practice. You will be approved under Section 12 (2) of the Mental Health Act 1983 and be an Approved Clinician or able to achieve this within 3 months of your appointment.

The salary range for this post is in accordance with the NHS consultant salary scale (whole time), plus London Weighting (whole time).
