We are seeking an enthusiastic General Surgeon to join our department at Glan Clwyd Hospital, to help provide a high quality surgical service to the population of central North Wales.

Benign Upper GI and Emergency General Surgery. The need for this post has arisen from the increasing demand for consultant leadership in the provision of emergency general surgery, and for the increasing need for urgent and elective benign upper GI (particularly biliary) surgical services. There will be opportunities to develop further sub-specialty interests within General Surgery. The out of hours on call commitment will be 1 in 8.

There will be opportunities to undertake roles within Medical Education both within the department and in the wider Health Board. Those wishing to do so will be supported financially to undertake Continuing Professional Development to Masters level, if so wished, in both education and leadership spheres. For those interested in research the post offers the chance to work with the North Wales Clinical Research Centre. The department has established links with a number of universities, and other institutions, for collaborative research projects.

The successful candidate will join a closely-knit team of consultants in the department of General Surgery. There is excellent support from colleagues in gastroenterology, anaesthetics & critical care, radiology and other specialties, as well as from clinical nurse specialists, the nutrition team, and surgical trainees. The North Wales Oncology Centre is on site, allowing close collaboration with oncologists for MDT working and clinical trials.

Glan Clwyd Hospital has recently undergone a major refurbishment project, giving its surgeons access to brand new and extremely high standard facilities. These include 11 new operating theatres (including two OR1 laparoscopic theatres), anew emergency quadrant, and a 16-bedded critical care unit. We are an innovative department, and are early adopters of new techniques and approaches, including minimally invasive techniques and ambulatory emergency surgery.

These posts offers the opportunity to practice surgery at the highest standard, while enjoying an exceptionally high standard of living, in one of the country’s most beautiful areas. The mountains of Snowdonia, and the hills, valleys and beaches of North Wales are on the doorstep; the opportunities to enjoy mountain and watersports are endless. The outdoor lifestyle is complemented by easy access to nearby big cities, airports and the motorway and rail networks.

So, if you’re a high-flying surgeon and a strong team player, and you like the sound of our work-life balance, we’d like to hear from you. For more information, please contact Mr Richard Morgan, Clinical Lead - 01745 448788 x7251, or Mr Andrew Maw, Colorectal Lead - 01745 448788 x7030.
