Locum Consultant Physician in Medicine for the Elderly
We are delighted to invite applications for the above position to provide maternity leave cover for a year.
The Consultant team is based at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary (ARI) and/or Woodend Hospital in Aberdeen and form part of a team that provide the in-reach medical service to the Acute Geriatric Service based at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. This team also provides medical leadership to Rehabilitation wards and a Hospital Based Complex Care ward at Woodend and a wide variety of out-patient and Community Geriatrician workload across Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire, including joint working with GP’s in surgeries and care homes.
Liaison work in other Medical and Surgical wards within the hospitals also forms an important part of the Consultant team role to facilitate patient flow within the hospitals. The postholder will join one of the largest departments of Geriatric Medicine in Scotland, with exciting opportunities for clinical work at a time when innovative redesign and provision of new services are planned or taking place.
The development of an ‘Acute Care at Home’ model of service delivery in Aberdeen City is a key element of the strategic plan identified within the Community Geriatric Services of the Aberdeen City Health and Social Care Partnership.
Applications are invited from suitably qualified and experienced medical staff.
Links are being developed with colleagues within the Moray Health and Social Care Partnership to continue fostering a Grampian wide strategic approach to Geriatric Medicine.
The service is also closely integrated with the Academic Department and there are excellent opportunities for research and active involvement in under/postgraduate education is anticipated. It is likely that the University of Aberdeen will accord Honorary status of Senior Clinical Lecturer. The Department of Rehabilitation and Medicine for the Elderly are closely linked and there are established services supporting Stroke, Orthopaedic Rehabilitation and Parkinson’s disease.
A Tilt Table service is also provided within Aberdeen developing links to Community to assess falls and it is envisaged that this, together with the ongoing development of Consultants aligned to localities within the new integrated health and social care arrangements, will enhance our already proactive department. Links between these postholders and these services will be actively encouraged to provide a seamless and high quality service for our elderly patients.
Candidates with any special interest in a related field will be actively encouraged to develop their area of expertise and a specific interest in Orthogeriatrics, Falls, Parkinsons Disease or the strategic identified area for development of ‘Acute Care at Home’ would be useful. However, any interest could be accommodated and research/audit is encouraged.
Aberdeen is a University City with one of the oldest medical schools in Europe and is the centre of the North Sea oil industry. It offers an excellent quality of life with diverse leisure activities, a high standard of schooling and is within easy reach of the Highlands for hill walking and skiing.
