From 1 November 2017 the NHSBSA took over the administration of the infected blood scheme from the collective 5 charities that previously performed this role. We support people historically infected with hepatitis C and/or HIV from NHS blood or blood products and families, civil or long-term partners after the death of someone infected.

We continue to provide the service under a ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ with the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). The NHSBSA is a special health authority which, as part of the ‘DH family’ of organisations, already administers a number of DH services, such as NHS Pensions Scheme.  We have recently relocated the England Infected Blood Support Scheme (EIBSS) from London to Newcastle and are seeking Medical Professionals with extensive knowledge in the following areas:

Hepatology - In particular HCV

Infectious diseases – In particular HIV

As a medical expert, you will be responsible for assessing applications for eligibility, against the relevant scheme criteria. The assessment is carried out by applying your clinical judgement to the paper application submitted by or on behalf of the applicant, and, where appropriate, seeking further information from the medical practitioner relied on by the applicant. You do not perform any form of assessment in person or have any communications with the applicant.

Typically we receive approximately 20 applications per month but this number does and will vary.

We would expect you to attend meetings in the office where possible (travel expenses covered) and an induction with previous medical expert will be arranged.
