Consultant in Anaesthetics (Trauma and Orthopaedic)
The post is for a Consultant with an interest in Anaesthetics for Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery. This post is permanent and based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead. All posts are offered on a whole time or part time basis. In addition to elective theatre lists, the successful candidates will join a 1 in 6 on-call rota, providing cover for Trauma lists on Saturdays and Sundays and 1 bank holiday per year.
The post holder will work flexibly with their Consultant colleagues within the wide remit of the Department’s activity. A formal job plan will be agreed on appointment.
The Department consists of 26 consultants, 3 speciality doctors, 2 clinical fellows and trainees from the Northern Deanery. It covers 12 theatres, obstetrics and ECT. It also provides support for remote specialties. An emergency theatre is staffed and available 24/7. Theatre workload is currently circa 12000 cases per annum.
The Department supports weekday Trauma lists as well as Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holiday trauma cover. We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague to work as part of a 6 person trauma on-call team.
The Department provides a 24/7 epidural service for obstetrics, the maternity unit has approximately 1700 deliveries per year. There is also an Acute and Chronic Pain Management service, including outpatient and interventional sessions.
There is a 12-bedded adult critical care unit, accepting approximately 1000 admissions per year. There are 6 level 3 and 6 level 2 commissioned beds. It provides comprehensive care of the critically ill patient. This includes renal support and continuous cardiac output monitoring.
Medical Practitioners should be fully registered with the General Medical Council and have a Certificate of Completion of Specialist training or be within 6 months of obtaining a Certificate of Completion of Specialist training at the time of interview.
