We’re recruiting a new, full or part time substantive consultant haematologist with an interest in myeloma and haematological malignancies diagnostics to join our team of 13 Haematologists working at Southampton General Hospital, part of University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust (UHS).


Clinical haematology incorporates haemato-oncology, transplantation, general haematology, haemoglobinopathy, and haemostasis and thrombosis services. The haematology service is subspecialty based and provides a comprehensive clinical and laboratory service to the local population in Southampton and south west Hampshire. We also provide tertiary referrals for specialist opinions for complex cases, for transplantation, and for clinical trials.

Cancer care is formed by the departments of medical oncology, clinical oncology, haematology and palliative care. The Southampton Oncology Centre provides comprehensive cancer services to a population of approximately 1.7 million and provides a high degree of specialisation with multidisciplinary clinics for all the major cancers.

There is a rapidly expanding portfolio of haematology clinical trials in Southampton including both NIHR portfolio studies and both early and late phase commercial studies and investigator led studies. Southampton is both an LLR tap centre and member of the myeloma UK clinical trials network. Clinical research in haematology is supported by a team of five clinical trials practitioners and four clinical trials administrators.


The purpose of this post is to fully establish the SI-HMDS service in Southampton to enable it to meet both current and future needs, incorporating developments in genomics medicine.

Following reconfiguration of genomic testing across England, Southampton is a part of the Wessex and West Midlands Genomics Laboratory Hub and there’ll be an opportunity to develop diagnostic pathways across the wider region. There’ll be sufficient capacity in your job plan to review all diagnostic pathways and to redesign the service afresh, including the development of an in-house or externally sourced IT solution to meet NICE standards.

The myeloma and plasma cell disorders team at UHS manage patients from Southampton and South West Hampshire as well as regional referrals with myeloma and related disorders. Activity has trebled in the last five years through increased outpatient, day case and home care treatments as well as an increase in autologous transplants for myeloma from 23 in 2011 to 68 in 2015. There is a thriving clinical trials practice and you will support and help to develop the service, whilst working to improve patient experience.


You must have CCT in haematology or be on the GMC Specialist Register, however consideration will also be given to applicants with consultant level experience working towards GMC specialist registration.

As well as good leadership and interpersonal skills, you’ll be expected to demonstrate: 

a broad experience base in haematology
experience in the management of myeloma
excellent communication skills, to a professional standard, in spoken and written English
significant experience in haematology research would be an advantage
Where equivalent qualifications or experience are being offered, it is essential that candidates should provide confirmation of this from the relevant college or faculty in the United Kingdom and attach the confirmation to your application.
