The School has been a major cornerstone of the University since its foundation and both its work and its graduates have been recognised nationally and internationally.
The School has 600 staff and 2600 undergraduate and postgraduate students.
It is made up of three Education Centres - Medical Education, Dentistry, and Biomedical Sciences - and the Global Research Institute for Health Sciences, incorporating three research centres – Public Health, Cancer and Cell Biology, and Experimental Medicine – all with a major focus on translational research. The School is driven by a commitment to enhance and improve the quality of life and health care provision available to patients through high-quality research programmes and enhanced educational opportunities and training for future generations of doctors, dentists, scientists and researchers. The Centre for Medical Education
The Centre for Medical Education oversees the development, management and delivery of the undergraduate medical programme, working closely in the first two years with the Centre for Biomedical Sciences Education. The Centre has established excellent partnerships with General Practice, the Postgraduate Deanery (Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency) and with the hospital Trusts in Northern Ireland, through the appointment of Sub-Deans in each of the Trusts. Admission to the undergraduate medical programme is very competitive and the intake is increasingly diverse with applicants from across the world. Early clinical contact is provided through the Family Attachment scheme and the ‘Clinical and Professional Skills’ modules in years one and two. Students are encouraged to undertake an intercalated year (BSc or MSc level) and, as part of the Erasmus scheme, the Centre has international links with medical schools in Norway, Germany, Spain and Ireland. In years 3 and 4, most of the teaching is based in the clinical environment. The final year Student Assistantship with a focus on Patient Safety aims to ensure that the transition from medical student to Foundation year trainee is a smooth process and reflects our underlying philosophy that medical education is a lifelong journey.
The Centre is undertaking a fundamental review of the five year curriculum and the Centre Director will be responsible for progressing this to successful implementation in partnership with key stakeholders.
Role of the Director
In addition to providing leadership and strategic direction to the Centre, the Director will be fully responsible, through the current devolved accountability model, for the management of all financial, physical and human resources within the Centre, as well as for corporate governance.
Candidates must be clinically qualified and be able to demonstrate academic leadership gained over a sustained period in the development, delivery, evaluation and enhancement of undergraduate medical curricula as well as relevant scholarly activity and/or clinical research.
The appointee will have experience in teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level, including contributing significant innovation in teaching and assessment and in playing a leadership role in quality assuring delivery to enhance the student experience. Experience in leading inter-disciplinary education is an essential requirement.
The appointee will have strong leadership skills with the ability to set strategic direction, influence policy and strategy, motivate colleagues, and deliver change. S/he will have a track record in the management of staff and resources with evidence of successfully developing productive staff and teams through setting and managing performance against targets. Ability to lead teams and forge team spirit and coherence in order to achieve the Centre’s objectives is essential.
The appointee will also have outstanding communication skills in order to successfully present and negotiate at institutional, national and international levels and influence senior policy makers. S/he will have the ability to establish successful relationships and work in partnership with stakeholders in order to enhance the quality of provision of teaching and scholarly activity.
Most importantly, s/he must demonstrate the commitment to and enthusiasm for creating a world class Centre for Medical Education in the context of the overall vision of the School.

It is anticipated that interviews will take place in April 2019 with the successful appointee taking up as soon as possible thereafter.
The position of Director is tenable for 5 years in the first instance but may be extended, and will attract an appropriate honorarium.
The successful candidate will be appointed to a permanent position in the School at the appropriate grade.
An Honorary Consultant Contract with the appropriate Health and Social Care organisation will be available, supported by an appropriate job plan.
