Public Health Wales is seeking to appoint a highly motivated, enthusiastic Public Health Specialist to the post of Consultant in Communicable Disease Control/ Consultant in Health Protection within our Health Protection Division. This post is available at 0.6wte on a permanent basis. The Health Protection Division of Public Health Wales provides surveillance of communicable disease and environmental hazard exposures, prevention and control of infectious disease, environmental public health services and laboratory services in Wales.

You will have a high level of understanding of surveillance of infectious disease and the health effects from exposure to environmental hazards and experience of investigating outbreaks and incidents in the community or healthcare settings.

You will be responsible for dealing with the surveillance, prevention and management of communicable and non-communicable hazards providing specialist advice and support. The local work of the national Health Protection teams support the seven Health Boards across Wales in discharging their statutory responsibilities for health protection, and work closely with the Directors of Public Health. There are 22 Local Authorities in Wales, with between two and six Local Authorities being collectively co-terminous with a Health Board. In addition, and by agreement with the Professional Lead for Health Protection, you will support a defined portfolio area working on an all Wales basis. 

In discharging these responsibilities, you will maintain and develop effective working relationships with the wide variety of individuals and organisations involved with protecting the health of the population. Candidates must be included on the GMC Specialist Register in Public Health, Microbiology or Infectious Diseases Medicine, or UK Public Health Register for Public Health Specialists. 

Public Health Wales 

Public Health Wales is the host organisation which includes the Health Protection Division as part of its Public Health Services Directorate. Established in 2009, it provides expert public health advice in relation to disease surveillance, prevention and control; environmental hazard surveillance and control; child protection; promoting health and well-being; health, social care and well-being strategies; public health policy and healthcare planning. 

Other functions of Public Health Wales include; child protection, promoting health & well-being, health, social care & well-being strategy, public health policy & healthcare planning. 

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
