Consultant in Stroke Medicine
Work at Wye Valley NHS Trust
Consultant in Stroke Medicine
Come and join us in lovely Herefordshire - a hidden gem of a county with glorious countryside where you can afford a lovely home with excellent schools and a great quality of life. We are pleased to be able to invite applications for the appointment of a Consultant in Stroke Medicine within the Wye Valley NHS Trust.
Wye Valley NHS Trust is responsible for the provision of acute and community services. Central to this is Hereford County Hospital, a modern rural District General Hospital opened in 2002 which is supported by four Community Hospitals and Community Services. The Trust serves a population of around 230,000 from Herefordshire and surrounding counties.
The hospital has undergone significant restructuring of its medical services in recent years and operates an acute medical model with the majority of medical specialities on site including Acute Medicine, Gastroenterology, Cardiology, Respiratory, Endocrinology, Stroke and Geriatrics. There is regional support from Neurology and Renal medicine in Birmingham.
The successful candidate would join the existing consultant in Stroke Medicine supported by Clinical Nurse Specialists, junior doctors in training, a specialty doctor, stroke specialist therapists and nurses in a friendly team delivering hyper-acute, acute and rehabilitation stroke care in one ward and the community.
The stroke service is configured as a combined inpatient unit on a single site for HASU/ASU/RSU with early supported discharge and a stroke specific community rehabilitation team.
There are approximately 600 confirmed stroke admissions per annum and a similar number of suspected TIAs. SSNAP clinical audit performance is D most recently.
The current consultant establishment is 2 WTE. This post is a replacement. The clinical workload would be expected to be shared equally between the consultants or pro rata if less than full time. Outpatient work would involve neurovascular clinics (approximately 700 per annum) and stroke follow up clinics (an area for expansion with support of CNS team and specialty doctor).
There is a specialty doctor in stroke, a rotational registrar in geriatric and general internal medicine, a GPST and 2 F1 posts under the supervision of the stroke consultants.
The post is advertised as a whole time 10PA post, although less-than-full time applications or job sharing arrangements may be considered. Additional Programmed Activities may be offered.
The Trust is developing links with other trusts to provide robust 7 day services in Stroke. This service is not yet in place but negotiations are well established to join a local network. Initial expectations would be that each stroke consultant would participate in a stroke rota, requiring them to provide diagnostic support to other centres. Compensatory rest would be offered for this.
We would recommend that you contact us to arrange a visit in order to realise all that Hereford has to offer in terms of professional and personal quality of life.
