Applications are invited from existing consultants or specialist registrars for a full time 11 PA replacement Consultant Microbiologist post at East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust.

The successful candidates will become part of a cohesive team of five consultant microbiologists providing a clinical, diagnostic and infection control service to community and secondary care facilities in East Kent in conjunction with infection control nurses, antimicrobial pharmacists and laboratory staff.

The laboratory, which is centralised on the William Harvey site in Ashford is UKAS ISO15189 accredited and is both a specialist mycology and virology centre. You will have or will be encouraged to develop a special interests and areas of expertise to complement the skills of the rest of the team. The philosophy of the department is to work in a collegiate fashion to provide support to colleagues and enhance the quality of the clinical service. The department is committed to innovation and quality improvement. There will be opportunities to introduce new services and different ways of working. Participation in research is actively encouraged, both portfolio studies and collaborative scientific research in conjunction with local academic institutions such the Universities of Kent and Medway School of Pharmacy. You will be supported in developing as a clinical leader and will have the opportunity to take on key leadership roles.

The medical microbiologists rotate round all the main hospital sites providing clinical and diagnostic advice to a range of general and specialist services including, Renal Medicine, Neurology, Maxillofacial Surgery, Haemato-oncology, Neonatology and Orthopaedics

The post is for 10 Pas with an additional PA for one in five on call provision and is subject to the terms and conditions of the 2003 consultant contract. All applicants must either be on the General Medical Council’s Specialist Register or within six months of obtaining their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in Microbiology/Infectious Diseases/Virology at the time of interview.

East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust, with links to the University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church University, was established on 1st April 1999 and manages three acute district general hospitals (at Margate, Canterbury and Ashford) with two supporting hospitals (at Dover and Folkestone). The Trust was awarded University status in August 2008 and Foundation status in April 2009. The Trust is one of the largest in the country, serving a population of 759,000 and employing over 6500 people with a budget of around £480M.

As a teaching Trust it East Kent Hospitals University Foundation Trust plays a vital role in the education and training of doctors, nurses and other health professionals, working closely with local universities and King’s College, University of London. In 2020 the Kent and Medway Medical School will open proving clinical training across all hospitals in Kent, with a preclinical school being established on the university campuses in Canterbury.
