Chief Executive Officer (CEO)
The British Medical Association (BMA)
Reward: £Competitive | Location: Central London
The British Medical Association (BMA) is the Professional Association and Independent Trade Union representing the interests of over 150,000 UK/UK-based doctors and medical students. Policies are determined by doctors in national, regional and local forums and devolved national councils. A series of professional activities and special interest committees promote excellence on ethical, scientific, research, educational and international matters. This deeply embedded culture of debate and consultation is channelled through a committee structure where motions covering a wide range of policy matters are forwarded to a Representative Body - the main policy-making body - and then debated/voted upon at the Annual Representative Meeting (ARM).
The UK BMA Council (Council), which is elected by the membership, is charged with implementing ARM policy and directing the BMA’s work. The BMA has an executive and administrative workforce of nearly 550 colleagues, led currently by an interim CEO, who is responsible for the detailed, day-to-day operations required to deliver the policies and goals of the Association. The BMA has a number of subsidiary companies, the largest being the British Medical Journal (BMJ) which has grown rapidly in recent years to become a highly successful, £75m turnover commercial publishing and software company, operating globally. The running of the Association is delegated to a Board; Council sets policy and remains the principal democratic body for membership.
The BMA now seeks a permanent appointee in the CEO role. Reporting to the BMA Chair of Council, you will work with the Chair and elected members to establish the future direction and leadership of the Association, and to implement the organisation’s coherent, measurable strategic goals and objectives as defined by the UK Council and the Board. Under the direction of the Chair of Council and through the Chief Officers and Senior Leadership Team, the CEO will represent the Association at a number of levels, building strong relationships with key stakeholders across the BMA and the wider UK health and social care landscape. You will provide inspirational leadership to the team, whilst setting budgets and reviewing pay structures. Analysis of costs and setting of budgets to ensure the company is effective must be combined with a constant awareness of competitive landscapes, membership base and opportunities for expansion and improving membership numbers.
Suitable candidates will have a proven track record of successful leadership at Board level gained within a comparable arena, ideally with a strong understanding of the Health sector. You will have experience of implementing strategy in a complex, multi-stakeholder setting, with exposure to managing relationships at a national level. You will possess first-class influencing and communication skills, with clear evidence of developing an organisational culture committed to high standards of performance and quality. You will need to empathise with the unique blend of governance associated with a trade union and professional association that is pursuing a patient-care-based agenda.
