Consultant in General Paediatrics Lead in ED Paediatric Assessment
This post is integral to an exciting phase of development in north-west London. It is one of two posts for consultant paediatricians which will in the vanguard of remodeling the department provide greater depth for the ED and general paediatric team as well as lead and have oversight of the paediatric assessment unit The post will work closely with colleagues (especially those focusing on Emergency and Ambulatory care) to develop the full potential of the Day Units.
The Directorate currently delivers on three hospital sites as well as through three community paediatric departments, providing services to 10% of London’s childhood population. As a new organisation, we are adopting a progressive approach to service development, whilst maintaining all the achievements of our history. The successful applicants will have an opportunity not only to participate in this journey, but also to shape and influence its future direction.
Of the three hospitals, the Paediatric Emergency Department and Paediatric inpatient units are based at the Northwick Park Hospital site. Outpatient services are delivered on all three sites. Ealing Hospital, in addition, has a Paediatric Day Unit for low risk category of clinical cases. Northwick Park Hospital has Paediatric Day Unit, as well as a Short Stay Paediatric Assessment Unit (collocated within Emergency Department).
Northwick Park Hospital site is a level 1 POSCU. NHS England are expected to tender PSCU services to commission two at Level 2 in the NW London sector, and LNWH will be positioning itself to mount a successful bid.
The neonatal unit is a “local neonatal unit” (previously level II) and is part of the NW London neonatal Network. The hospital has around 5,000 deliveries per year. There are 32 cot spaces of which 5 are funded for intensive care.
The inpatient unit (Jack’s Place) is a recently refurbished 27 bedded unit. The refurbishment recently won acclaim from the CQC and the Healthy London Partnerships peer review. It is able to deliver critical care level 1.
The Short Stay Paediatric Assessment Unit comprises 4 beds with two additional flexible beds.
The Paediatric Emergency Department is situated within the main Emergency Department, which was a £20 million development and is regarded as state of the art.
The postholder will be split between Northwick Park and Ealing Hospital sites. On the Northwick Park site, the postholder will provide consultant duties in Emergency Department & Short Stay Paediatric Assessment Unit (EDPAU) in the Northwick park site, and be the lead for the paediatric assessment unit. In addition, the post holder will play a role in supporting the OPD work on the Ealing Hospital site and developing the clinical interest in their chosen specialty. Currently this is in the form of allergy clinics and we would hope to continue this if the postholder desires.
