Consultant in Obstetrics & Maternal Medicine
Applications are invited for a new post, created to increase expertise in High Risk Obstetrics & Delivery Suite management within the Trust and to provide leadership and innovation within the Directorate of Maternity & Perinatal Medicine.
The Trust is one of the largest Teaching Trusts in the UK, employing 6,500 staff, serving a population of over 500,000 and having around 1,000 beds. In partnership with PCTs and Local Authorities the Trust is seeking to deliver an ambitious redevelopment of local health services including new models of care and facilities. The plan includes a new state of the art acute hospital
(Midland Metropolitan Hospital); this will create some of the largest clinical teams in the country, including a large single-site Maternity Unit.
The Trust is fully committed to continuing to develop its Maternity Services, which have received CNST Level 3 recognition. As such, it has invested significantly in the Directorate and will continue to do so to promote an exceptional standard. The successful applicants will be joining a dynamic, evolving team driven to develop excellence in services and care for women & their babies.
All maternity services are provided at City Hospital, delivering approximately 6,000 women per year, where there is a large level 2+ NNU and full capability to provide HDU and ITU care to our mothers. There is a nationally recognised co-located midwifery-led birthing unit and a sister, stand-alone unit sited in Sandwell.
The Fetal Medicine Unit was newly developed and equipped in 2010 and provides a full range of FM diagnostic and screening services. The unit has well established links to allied regional services. Antenatal care is based on a specialist multidisciplinary clinic model with clinics being staffed by dual consultants.
This post will have responsibility for promoting in-house delivery suite/ obstetric training and clinical and managerial responsibility for further developing maternal medicine services within our dedicated antenatal clinic and by liaison with adult medical specialties. There are 6 dedicated obstetricians and 12 other consultants in obstetrics and gynaecology at City Hospital with a full complement of junior staff.
This post is designed to maintain 98 hours consultant presence on delivery suite. The job plan is full-time, 10 PA/wk; it includes one 12 hour day shift alternate week on Delivery Suite and regular Fri/weekend on-all work (1:8 wks).
Applicants are required to have CCT or equivalent and entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Obstetrics and Gynaecology; full GMC registration, MRCOG (or equivalent) and RCOG ATSM qualification in Advanced Labour Ward practice and Maternal Medicine (or equivalent)are essential.
