The Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre (BMEC), founded in 1823, is one of the largest tertiary level Ophthalmic Hospitals in Europe, providing highly specialised expertise in clinical care, research and education. We are a Tertiary Centre and for the West Midlands, hosting the Bechet’s centre of excellence as well as receiving referrals both nationally and internationally for whole range of eye conditions. We host the Greater Birmingham emergency eye care services and provide the only inpatient facility for this area.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a high calibre Ophthalmologists with a specialist interest In Oculoplastic, Orbital and Lacrimal surgery to join our expanding world-class team at BMEC, part of Sandwell & West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust. We are increasing our current consultant team of 33, enabling us to meet the growing ophthalmic demands of our ever changing demographics and being the key providers of high quality specialist care.
Are you ready to join our outstanding medical team; many of whom are internationally renowned for cutting-edge research and care innovation and work collaboratively within its integrated A & E, Ward, Theatre, Outpatient and Diagnostic teams. The post holder will be supported by fellows, ASTOs and working with an extended team of specialist nurses, allied health professionals, technicians and photographers to further support new ways of working and expand the quality services BMEC already offers and be part of excellence in the field.
The successful candidate will join an existing team of 3 full time and one part time Oculoplastic surgeons, carrying out the full range of Oculoplastic, Orbital and lacrimal procedures in adult and paediatric cases. The theatres are of highest standard including a broad range of equipment to enable complex procedures to be carried out, fully supported by anaesthetics team in addition to the multidisciplinary support and dedicated inpatient beds. The team receives orbital and oculoplastic referrals from the whole of the Midlands and beyond, hence serving a very large population.
The appointee is also required to have wide training and experience in general ophthalmology as well as sub-speciality training appropriate to the post.
We have an excellent reputation as the centre of post-graduate training in Ophthalmology for the West Midlands region. We are the hosts of the Ophthalmology Academy Unit of the University of Birmingham and have one of the biggest Ophthalmology research portfolios in the country.
