Consultant in Geriatric Medicine
We are looking for a new colleague to join our friendly, supportive department. The post will be predominantly based in Brighton. You will be involved in acute and community geriatric medicine with flexibility around subspecialty work.
We are rapidly developing the care of frailer patients within the hospital. We feel we can be most effective maintaining a strong presence at the “front door” while also overseeing community care for patients following discharge and avoiding inappropriate admission.
You will be joining the team on one of our award winning units for treating medical problems in patents with dementia. There is the possibility of having sessions of community Geriatrics, providing support to an intermediate care unit and running a community clinic. Perhaps you have your own specialist interest - we are all flexible and will accommodate this wherever possible. Specialist areas supported by geriatricians include osteoporosis, Parkinson’s disease, falls, surgical liaison and dementia.
We are open to innovation and have the support of the Trust to improve services for frail patients. There are many opportunities for leadership. One of our successful innovations is Shared Leadership, where we have no single departmental lead, rather we all share the leadership responsibilities and decisions for the service. This has led to reduced stress levels and increased engagement. We are happy to support part-time working.
At RSCH, you will be doing a needs-related on call, with a weekend frequency of 1 in 8. You will cover evening and overnight GIM on calls (including elderly medicine) on approximately a 1 in 20 basis.
You will benefit from our close ties to Brighton and Sussex Medical School. There are opportunities to join geriatricians leading on both undergraduate education at BSMS and postgraduate education through HE KSS. We have a strong research base through the Academic department, led by Professor Rajkumar and 2 senior lecturers. We will do our best to support and develop any research interests.
