The Birmingham & Midland Eye Centre (BMEC), founded in 1823, is one of the largest tertiary level Ophthalmic Hospitals in Europe, providing highly specialised expertise in clinical care, research and education. We are a Tertiary Centre and for the West Midlands, hosting the Bechet’s centre of excellence as well as receiving referrals both nationally and internationally for whole range of eye conditions. We host the Greater Birmingham emergency eye care services and provide the only inpatient facility for this area.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a high calibre Ophthalmologist with
a specialist interest in Neuro Ophthalmology to join our expanding world-class team at BMEC, part of Sandwell & West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust.
We are increasing our current consultant team of 33, enabling us to meet
the growing ophthalmic demands of our ever changing demographics and
our growing reputation of excellence in care and a track record of efficient
streamlined service delivery.
The appointee will be joining one full time neuro ophthalmologist, supported by trainees, fellow, SAS grades, a top class orthoptic department with multidisciplinary support including a neurologist working in the department.

renowned for cutting-edge research and care innovation and work collaboratively within its integrated A & E, Ward, Theatre, Outpatient and Diagnostic teams.
The post holder will be working with an extended team of specialist nurses, allied health professionals, technicians and photographers to further support new ways of working and expand the quality services BMEC already offers and be part of excellence and a progressive department.
The appointee is required to have wide training and experience in general
ophthalmology. Post-CCT training in neuro-ophthalmology and
demonstration of abilities and potential to further expand this sub-specialty are essential. Post can also be suitable for a medical ophthalmologist.
We have an excellent reputation as the centre of post-graduate training
in Ophthalmology for the West Midlands region. We are the hosts of the
Ophthalmology Academy Unit of the University of Birmingham and have
one of the biggest Ophthalmology research portfolios in the country. BMEC
