This is an exciting opportunity to join Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust, as it has recently become one of the first vertically integrated health and care organisations in the country. The acquisition of the community health and social care provider (Torbay and Southern Devon Health and Care NHS Trust) allows us to radically re-think and re-shape the way we deliver care, free from traditional organisational constraints. This post offers an opportunity to be part of designing and delivering innovative new services in Torbay and South Devon, including more integrated and streamlined care pathways for patients.

Torbay Hospital is a medium sized District General Hospital providing acute services to South Devon. We are situated about two miles from the centre of Torquay and virtually all facilities, including two new linear accelerators, are concentrated on the one site.

There are excellent opportunities for a variety of lifestyles and interests being close to both the Coast and Moorland. Torquay offers excellent state schools, with academic success at the highest levels for both A Levels and the international Baccalaureate.

The haematology service requires a full time consultant haematologist. This is an additional post due to changes in job plans of two colleagues. The appointee will join a team of five consultants (three part time), to provide a comprehensive inpatient and outpatient service to Torbay and South Devon. There is large portfolio of NCRI clinical trials open and we are developing a commercial trial portfolio.

We are active in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education, with medical students and physician associate trainees from both peninsular medical schools (Exeter and Plymouth) joining our department throughout the academic year for clinical placements.

There is a dedicated haematology/oncology ward with 18 beds (4 HEPA filtered rooms) and a combined day unit for the delivery of chemotherapy and emergency assessment of patients providing BCSH level 2B services. The team also comprises one specialist registrar, four junior doctors (shared with Oncology), six nurse specialists (two research, two malignant, two thrombosis and haemostasis) and one physician associate.

We work closely with our colleagues across the peninsula with Derriford Hospital, Plymouth, as part of the South West peninsula transplant service, to provide autologous transplants (delivered locally) and allogeneic transplants.

We are developing and strengthening links with the Royal Devon and Exeter hospital, and are exploring collaborative working across sites to allow further opportunities for subspecialisation, research, and education. This should impact favourably on in- and out-of-hours clinical commitments in the future, and makes it a particularly exciting time to be joining our team as you will have the opportunity to help shape the future of our haematology service, both for the patients of Torbay and South Devon and as part of the peninsular network

Applicants are required to be on the GMCs Specialist Register with a licence to practice or within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT at the time of interview.
