Consultant Medical Oncologist
Renowned for its sandy beaches and granite cliffs, mild climate and close proximity to France, Guernsey offers a high quality of life in a beautiful environment. The unique consultant-delivered healthcare system offers a combination of high quality medicine and continuity of care.
We are seeking to appoint a Consultant Medical Oncologist. This is a new post, tumour site interests would ideally include urological and gynaecological cancers but other interests would be considered. The post holder would join two already established Medical Oncologists and this post has become necessary due to an increasing workload and the need for greater specialisation in an expanding Oncology practice. A good general knowledge of oncology and acute oncology is required.
This is an ideal opportunity for a committed Oncologist to help shape the future development of the cancer service in a small though busy island unit.
Built in 2010, the Oncology Unit is a modern, purpose-built department situated within the Princess Elizabeth Hospital. We are well staffed with experienced oncology nurses and the Lead Cancer Nurse is based within the department.
Guernsey does not have junior doctors and so consultants have more direct patient involvement and are able to provide excellent continuity of care. There is excellent support from the radiology department, with easy availability of MRI and CT. A new state of the art CT scanner and SPECT-CT scanner will be installed in 2019. The MRI scanner is due to be upgraded in 2020.
Almost all chemotherapy can be safely administered on island, but for high dose treatments, stem cell transplants etc. patients are managed in our tertiary centre, University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust. Radiotherapy is also generally provided by Southampton.
The Medical Specialist Group is a partnership of currently 47 Consultants, which, under contract, provides specialist medical services to the Guernsey Health Service under a health care model that is different and separate to the NHS.
There are opportunities for private practice within the job plan and 10 days of fully funded study leave annually. The new appointee will be encouraged to develop an off-island attachment with a tertiary centre to maintain expertise.
Other benefits include a full relocation package; private health insurance and a generous salary (NB the income tax rate for Guernsey is currently 20% with no higher rates).
The Princess Elizabeth Hospital is a modern hospital of approximately 145 beds and there are strong clinical links with UK mainland centres, particularly Southampton General Hospital.
Guernsey offers an outdoor lifestyle with outstanding leisure facilities and excellent provision of schools in both state and private sectors.
Enquiries can be made to Dr Peter Gomes (email email@example.com) or Dr Yogesh Manikyam (email firstname.lastname@example.org). Information packs are available from email@example.com or telephone the HR department on 01481 239988.
