Chair, Department of Psychiatry
The Aga Khan University is a private, international university committed to international standards of excellence in teaching, research and service. Its teaching hospital, the Aga Khan University Hospital has been accredited by the prestigious Joint Commission International for achieving the highest international healthcare standards.
The department of psychiatry has a strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate education, research, and clinical services. The department offers comprehensive psychiatric and psychological evaluation, consultation and treatment services in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Treatment modalities include pharmacotherapy, ECT, individual and family therapy and behaviour management techniques. Subspecialties include child and adolescent psychiatry and geriatric psychiatry. An occupational therapy programme is attached to the inpatient and daycare services. Formal structured undergraduate teaching and postgraduate residency programmes are integrated into the academic functions of the department.
The academic and clinical service functions of the department of psychiatry are interdependent. Responsibility of the Chair extends to appropriate recruitment, retention and performance of faculty for both functions.
The academic functions include planning and distribution of the work of faculty for implementing the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in psychiatry and conducting research; appraisal of faculty performance; and the organisation of faculty development. The Chair reports to the Dean of the Medical College for the academic functions and their dependence as well as impact on the clinical service.
Organisation of the clinical service of psychiatry is the function of the University Hospital (AKUH). Therefore, recruitment and assurance of the quality of care given by faculty are achieved through close liaison with the Chief Medical Officer and CEO of the Hospital. Thus the faculty provide both the care sought by patients and the education and training of students and residents.
The department of psychiatry works on a holistic recovery focused multi-disciplinary framework of patient care which requires an active collaboration amongst disciplines including Psychiatry, Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Nursing and other allied specialties. The Department has a diverse skill mix focusing both on neurochemical as well as psychosocial aspects of mental illnesses.
The clinical service of psychiatry is organized as a component of a service line that includes neurology and neurosurgery, led by a clinician (Service Line Chief) from one of the components and supported by a manager of the nursing service and another for administration and finance. Along with the Service Line Chief, the Chair of the Department is responsible to the CEO of AKUH for the clinical performance of the faculty.
The University and Hospital are committed to provide exemplary quality of health care, professional education, training and research. The Chair of the Department is required to be a leader in provision of service and academic functions and contribute to enhancement of the knowledge, skills, proficiency and efficiency of service and academic functions, as well as advancement of the Medical College and University. In order to accomplish this, the Chair candidate should have suitable professional qualifications, academic achievements and leadership experience as well as a vision for Psychiatry to contribute towards establishing a Centre of Excellence in Neurosciences.
