The Princess Royal University Hospital Site

The Department of Trauma & Orthopaedics at the Princess Royal University Hospital, a division of Kings College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, is looking for enthusiastic and committed Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgeon with a special interest in Foot & Ankle surgery.

The Princess Royal University Hospital Campus

The Princess Royal University Hospital (PRUH), at Farnborough Common, Orpington, Kent is an acute district general hospital. It has 525 funded beds, and approximately 80,000 emergency attendances per annum. It serves a population of about 500,000 from Bromley and Bexley. The services currently provided include: Urgent Care, Emergency Medicine, Acute and General medicine with sub-specialities including Cardiology, Respiratory, Gastroenterology, Acute Frailty Unit, Elderly Care , Intensive Care, Oncology, Surgery, Trauma & Orthopaedics, Urology, ENT, Ophthalmology, Maternity and Paediatrics, Hyper acute and Acute Stroke services for provided for the South East Sector of London. The PRUH is a Level 2 Trauma Unit and a member of the TARN.

Tertiary Specialities and services are supported from our Denmark Hill Campus

The hospital is based in outer South East London in the London Borough of Bromley. The area provides fast public transport links into central London via mainline railway connections. The borough is a highly sought after area due to it many well-regarded primary and secondary schools .Bromley is a key leisure and retail destination within South London and regularly appears in the list of the annual top 50 places to live in the UK. It is also on the borders of the North Kent Downs and Sevenoaks Weald – areas of outstanding natural beauty. Road links are particularly strong to Surrey and Kent. There is access to the M25 via the A21 and the national motorway network onwards from Junction5.Therefore city living or country retreats are all accessible for you and your family.

The appointed Trauma & Orthopaedic surgeon will join a friendly and supportive team of 11 Consultants and 5 Associate Specialists that works collaboratively with the multidisciplinary teams at the Princess Royal University Hospital and Denmark Hill. There may also be opportunities for cross-site working between Denmark Hill site and the South sites, subject to agreement and needs. The team is currently supported by and is supported by 8 Specialist Registrars/ Senior Clinical Fellows (Reg level); 16 Junior Clinical Fellows/ Core Surgical Trainees/ MTI and cover both the PRUH and Orpington sites; a Specialist Nurse for Trauma and a Specialist Nurse for Hip Fractures.

Once appointed, there would be an expectation from the Consultant that further duties involving local governance, audit, performance, education and other such duties may be assigned to and expected of them.

The team will progress the development of specialist Hip fracture centre at the PRUH and a joint admission model of care with dedicated Orthogeriatric Consultants & their team for hip fracture and other elderly patients with fragility fractures at PRUH/ Orpington sites. They would be the keystone for work at the proposed Orthopaedic Elective Centre for South-East London, at Orpington Hospital which is being managed by the South Sites Division, based at the PRUH. The team is and would be expected to support the existing Rapid Access lists for suitable Trauma & minor surgery at the DSU, PRUH, robust seven-day working practices and new ways of working to realise of improvements in patient safety, experience and operational performance.

The post holder will be actively involved in the management of Orthopaedic Trauma at Princess Royal University Hospital, and provide a sub-speciality interest in the management of Foot & Ankle. It is essential that the post holder would have experience and fellowship level training in foot, ankle 
& trauma (foot & ankle) and is likely to obtain CCT in future or already has it or its equivalent. Experience in the management of general trauma and fragility and hip fractures are desirable.

The Trauma in-patients are based in a purpose-designed 28 bed ward for Hip fracture patients and other Surgical wards for overflow. There is a full component of nursing and physiotherapy, 24/7 for hip and other fragility fractures. There is a dedicated Children’s ward at the PRUH. ITU facilities are available at the PRUH or Denmark Hill.

The Orpington Elective Orthopaedic hospital is an elective centre with three laminar flow theatres, an admissions lounge and two wards of 19 and 28 beds.

There is a dedicated Day Surgery Unit at the PRUH, with 6 theatres, Mon-Fri and some Sat working, with approximately 12 Trauma & Orthopaedic lists per week, shared with other specialties. The unit is equipped to do U/Limb, Lower Limb and some types of Foot & Ankle day surgery, elective and trauma cases.
