Applications are invited for a permanent full time medical Consultant in Clinical Virology at Public Health England (PHE) National Infection Service (NIS) South West regional laboratory based in Bristol within the Severn Infection Sciences partnership. This post is suitable for applicants from a medical training background. Consideration will be given to individuals wishing to work part time or on a job share basis.
This is a replacement post joining two full time consultant virologists and one part time consultant virologist/CCDC. The appointee will work alongside virology, microbiology and infectious diseases colleagues in an integrated department within a multidisciplinary new build pathology facility based on the Southmead Hospital site in Bristol. You will be expected to fully support the clinical virology service predominantly through provision of clinical advice, laboratory reporting and test selection, patient consultations, infection control, and public health advice.
This post includes a 1:3 virology on call category A commitment, worked remotely.
Severn Infection Sciences provides diagnostic infection services for all of Bristol and Bath as one of the largest, most automated laboratory configurations in the UK. Bristol PHE Laboratory (PHL) is fully UKAS accredited. The Specialist Virology Centre of Bristol PHL provides a clinical virology and diagnostic service to University Hospitals Bristol NHS Trust, North Bristol NHS Trust, Royal United Hospitals Trust Bath, and Weston General Hospital, and to general practices in North and South Bristol, Bath and Weston. Molecular and serological testing is also offered to NHS microbiology laboratories in the South West region and beyond. The laboratories are well equipped with state of the art equipment commensurate with a modern service.
The Department is active in research and teaching, as well as a hub for training of clinical scientists and specialist registrars in infection specialties.
The setting of a Public Health England post within the Severn Infection Science partnership provides excellent opportunities to develop specialist interests allied to clinical virology and public health.
Bristol is the major city in South West England with excellent transport links. Applicants must have fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists by examination in virology, and full and specialist registration with the General Medical Council (GMC), licence to practise, and Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in medical virology, or medical microbiology and virology, or medical virology with infectious diseases. Non-UK applicants will be required to demonstrate the equivalent.
This is a clinical virology orientated job, therefore relevant, including recent, experience in the acute hospital setting is expected.
