General Practitioner/Medical Officer – with interest and relevant experience in chronic disease management

St Helena Island, South Atlantic

Helping to develop Primary Care Services, you will actively support our programme of health services reform, playing an active part in health promotion and preventative care programmes.

A sub-tropical island of spectacular and beautiful landscapes in the South Atlantic with a warm and friendly population of 4,500, St Helena is a self-governing overseas territory of the UK. It’s now poised for transformation with the recent opening of a brand new international airport offering scheduled commercial air access. The 28-bed General Hospital in the capital, Jamestown, covers all areas of acute medical and surgical care.

Working with the other medical officers, you will run out-patient clinics covering a wide range of practice, including diabetes, hypertension, cardio-pulmonary disease, paediatrics, ENT, ophthalmology etc. You will also be required to take care of in-patients as well as being primary on-call approximately every fourth night supporting the nursing staff in the triage and attending possible emergencies. You will be supported by specialist colleagues in anaesthetics, surgery, orthopedics and obstetrics/gynaecology as well as two other medical officers.

This role is suitable for General Practitioner or an Internal Medicine Specialist with interest in primary care and chronic disease management. Suitable candidates would already be Consultants or Registrars nearing completion of training to become consultants. A minimum of 5-years’ post qualification experience is essential with full GMC registration or equivalent, good standing with the relevant registering authority and a very good command of the English language.
