South London & Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) has a rare and exciting opportunity and is looking to recruit two substantive Consultant Psychiatrists to the Assessment and Liaison Team for the London Borough of Lewisham.

This is an excellent time to join us, as our trust has recently undergone reconfiguration around the operational management of adult mental health services to a borough based, localised structure. Whilst services are financially managed within local boroughs, the Clinical Academic Groups (CAGs) remain in place in this new reconfiguration as part of a new central Quality Centre, leading to design care pathways in line with the evidence base. Each Operations Directorate has a new management team structure with standardised roles across all the teams. Each structure will be led by a service director and a clinical director supported by a senior management team.

There are two consultant posts available in the Lewisham Assessment and Liaison Team ( A & L team). Lewisham A & L is a well-established, integrated team which takes all referrals to secondary care for 18 – 65 year olds unless they have symptoms of early onset psychosis or are re-referred after a recent discharge from Promoting Recovery Team. Referrals come from Primary care, Home Treatment teams, A&E, the mental health wards and other secondary care teams.

The team provide thorough crisis and routine assessments of clients who are thought to be suffering from a significant mental health problem that cannot be managed solely in primary care or with the support of Lewisham’s Primary Care Mental Health service (PCMHS). The overall caseload for the service is approximately 250 per neighbourhood, of which there are 4 neighbourhoods in Lewisham. The team offer short to medium term (with an aspiration of 12 weeks) focused interventions for those clients found to be having significant mental health problems.

The multi-professional team leadership team consists of 4 WTE consultant psychiatrists (including these posts), two GP trainee doctors, one Band 8a Clinical Service Lead (nurse) and two Band 7 Team Leaders (health and local authority employed). The team has a function to respond to crisis with a shorter response time and more frequent contact where needed until the patient is stabilised.

A crucial element of the team's work is to undertake effective liaison and consultation with Primary Care and other Lewisham mental health services and to improve on the positive links already established by the current team members. The Lewisham executive team are keen to develop the model further so as to work more closely and in partnership with our primary care services and this will therefore be an excellent opportunity for the post holders to be actively involved in service transformation.

The trust is a part of King’s Health Partners Academic Health Sciences Centre (AHSC). KHP is responsible for seeing 2 million patients each year, has 25,000 employees and 19,500 students, and a £2 billion annual turnover. It brings together the best of basic and translational research, clinical excellence and world-class teaching to deliver ground-breaking advances in physical and mental healthcare. There are excellent opportunities for teaching, training, supervising and mentoring medical students and trainee doctors, participating in audit and quality improvement projects and getting involved in research. You will work very closely with your fellow A and L consultants and also be encouraged to participate in and be a part of the famous Maudsley Grand rounds and be an active member of the Lewisham MAC (Medical Advisory committee) where you will have the opportunity to regularly network with and seek support from your consultant colleagues.

It is a condition of your employment that you are, and remain a fully registered medical practitioner and are included on the Specialist Register for General Adult Psychiatry held by the General Medical Council (GMC), or are eligible for inclusion into the register within six months of your appointment and continue to hold a licence to practice. You will be approved under Section 12 (2) of the Mental Health Act 1983 and be an Approved Clinician or able to achieve this within 3 months of your appointment.

The salary range for this post is in accordance with the NHS consultant salary scale (whole time), plus London Weighting (whole time).
