Consultant in Emergency General Surgery
This substantive appointment will complement existing surgery consultant staff. The appointee will have completed recognised general surgical training to consultant level, gained accreditation and specialist registration. Demonstrable interest in emergency surgery, laparoscopic skills and experience are desirable.
The appointee will participate in the General Surgery 1:6 emergency on-call rota. The current Emergency General Surgeon undertakes a 1:6 on-call frequency and the 7 other surgeons contribute to the rest of the on-call rota. The appointee is expected to develop emergency surgery services and work in partnership with all surgeons across the trust. We anticipate that the non-emergency component of the appointees’ work will be tailored to experience, training and service needs to include outpatient clinics, elective operating sessions, patient administration, etc and commensurate time off following on-call spells. A review of the general surgery services led to introducing an acute care pathway initiative in August 2018.
Applicants must be on the Specialist Register, or within 6 months of doing so, at the time of interview. Applications from those wishing to work part-time or job share are welcomed.
