Noble's Hospital - Isle of Man

(10 PA’s)

We are looking to appoint a motivated and driven Consultant in Colorectal and General Surgery to join our friendly and committed team here in the beautiful Isle of Man!

The Isle of Man Government’s vision is to deliver longer, healthier lives by becoming the best small island-based health and care system. This is an exciting opportunity where you can make a difference and be a part of shaping the Islands’ future health services.

The Isle of Man is a self-governing crown dependency within the British Isles, with those living on the Island benefiting from great lifestyle opportunities, open spaces, a safe environment, great education and a real sense of community.

Why you should join us…

  • Relaxed way of life, friendly people and low crime rates
  • Attractive relocation package with advice and support on relocation
  • Enjoy an outdoor lifestyle - walking, diving, sailing, mountain biking and great beaches
  • Short commutes with no traffic jams!
  • Low income tax rates, maximum rate is 20%
  • Great environment to raise a family with high standards of pupil behaviour and an extensive range of extra-curricular activities
  • Over 100 flights a week to London, Manchester, Dublin and regional airports

The Island’s healthcare is provided by a National Health Service based on that in the United Kingdom but is independently financed and administered within the Isle of Man.  Many of the changes brought about to the UK National Health Service, as a consequence of the extensive reorganisations of recent years have not been adopted in the Isle of Man.

Noble’s Hospital is situated in the capital of the Island and is equipped to the very latest standards with an Education and Training Centre and library situated in the grounds. The Hospital provides a comprehensive range of services typical of most District General Hospitals.

About the Department

The Department of Surgery provides comprehensive general, urology, colorectal and breast surgical services to the population of the Isle of Man. Although we undertake most general, colorectal and breast surgical services on the island, we have strong links with teaching hospitals across the North West of England for the delivery of complex surgeries in these areas, along with vascular surgery, upper GI surgery, hepatobiliary surgery and uro-oncology service.

The General Surgical Department has two inpatient wards and is supported by an operating department with 6 theatres, an anaesthetic department and a 6 bedded Intensive Care Unit. The department also has access to a brand new endoscopy unit which comprises three procedure rooms and a 6 bedded recovery area – this unit hosts all upper and lower GI endoscopy along with flexible cystoscopy and other urology cases. We are currently aiming to achieve JAG accreditation in 2019.

We operate an Enhanced Recovery Programme which is well developed and embedded and is supported by anaesthetic colleagues and the ward nursing and allied health professions team.

About the post

We are seeking to appoint a full time (10PA) substantive colorectal surgeon. This is a new post designed to meet the increasing demand for specialist colorectal services within our island. In addition to contributing to general coloproctology, it is hoped that the successful appointee will provide additional expertise in minimally invasive techniques and gastrointestinal endoscopy.

You will also be allocated the role of Clinical Lead for emergency surgical services and you will work alongside the clinical lead for theatre to transform the current service for emergency surgical patients. Support will be provided for this role from the management team, and opportunities to attend training sessions to develop knowledge and skills in this area will be provided.

We recognise the need for all medical staff on the Isle of Man to maintain connections with medicine in the United Kingdom and encourage links with other units as well as provide study leave with pay and expenses to attend approved conferences and workshops.

To be successful in this role, you will need to be registered with the GMC and be on the GMC specialist register via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6/12 of the date of the interview), CESR or European Community Rights.

In the Department of Health and Social Care we pride ourselves on being committed, appreciative, respectful and excellent. CARE represents what we are about, what we stand for and what we value. All our recruitment, performance management and staff development are based on our CARE ethos.
