The post

We are in the midst of re-evaluating our medical role and its configuration. We are seeking a Locum Consultant working in a prestigious organisation to help deliver cutting edge palliative medicine for 6 months in the first instance, pending our deliberations on how the new substantive job should look alongside the existing skill set within the consultant team.

This is a fantastic opportunity to work at a leading hospice who aspires to a world in which all dying people and those close to them have access to care and support, whenever and wherever they need it. Every year, St Christopher's provides this care and support to over 6,000 people in south east London as well as hosting training for healthcare professionals across the globe.

The Organisation

St Christopher’s was founded in 1967 by Dame Cicely Saunders as what is now known as the modern hospice movement. We are fully committed to our education and research programmes and we provide a holistic approach when caring for our patients, to ensure we are supporting their physical, spiritual and psychological wellbeing, as well as providing them with the very best clinical care.

We span a diverse population of approximately 1.6 million people within the five London Boroughs of Bromley, Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark. We employ about 550 staff (including hourly paid bank staff) who work within the community and across our two patient sites. We are supported by around 1200 volunteers, many of whom provide their invaluable services on a regular basis.

As a local service, we operate from two sites in Sydenham and Bromley (Orpington); services include:

  • palliative care from specialist doctors and nurses in the community/ outpatients based out of both sites with a 38 bedded inpatient unit on the Sydenham site
  • an interventional pain service in collaboration with the pain anaesthetists at KCL
  • Liaison psychiatry from SLAM
  • physiotherapy and occupational therapy
  • social work and welfare support
  • creative therapies and activities
  • complementary therapies
  • spiritual care
  • adult bereavement services
  • specialist support for bereaved children

Our Vision, Mission, Strategic Priorities and Values

Our vision is of a world in which all dying people, and those close to them, have access to the care and support they need, when and wherever they need it.

Our mission focuses on the provision of skilled and compassionate end of life care of the highest quality, working with the local communities we serve.

The demography of patients and families having to engage with death dying and loss is both growing and changing, the NHS and Social Care is in crisis and the ways in which care will have to be delivered in the future is uncertain and challenging. Palliative Medicine is a key specialty in this, but how it is now is unlikely to be how it should be in the future. St Christopher’s is embracing this challenge and undergoing a transformation of all our services and the way in which they should be delivered. Medicine is no exception.

Your new role

Joining us as a locum at this critical stage will offer you, as well as us, the opportunity to be part of and influence the different thinking we will need. This role may be suited to someone near or at the end of CCT or an established consultant wishing to take a career break or to look at things differently in terms of their contribution to the specialty, if only for a season.

Your principal responsibilities will be to

  • be part of the medical consultant body offering senior support to the organisation, including on call clinical cover
  • facilitate effective changes in medical practice as part of our transformation programme and
  • support the Medical Director in the strategic development of medicine as part of our adaption to and influence of developments in palliative and end of life care here and elsewhere

What you will get in return is a stimulating and rewarding opportunity to make a real difference in the community. You will also have access to free off street parking nearby, Onsite Staff Canteen.

What you need to do now For further information, or to arrange a visit, please contact Nina Amoo, Head of HR at St Christopher’s Hospice.
