GOSH UCL Institute of Child Health
Background and Overview
Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Foundation Trust has the widest range of paediatric specialties (>50) and largest critical care unit in the UK. Collectively, we admit approximately 1900 patients per year to our intensive care units, making the unit one of the largest of its kind in Europe.
The national services for Vein of Galen AVM intervention, ECMO, heart / lung transplantation and mechanical assist bridge to transplant are housed within the critical care areas. Our paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and specialised neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) provide the full spectrum of intensive care to infants and children with medical and surgical complications (except for liver transplantation).
PICU is situated within a refurbished purpose-built 23 bedded unit (treating 850 patients/year) and the specialised NICU in a 16 bedded unit (treating 350 babies/year). All of the critical care areas are national and international training centres with strong academic profiles.
Following a comprehensive review of the services on the specialised NICU and PICU, there is going to be an operational separation of the units. The specialised NICU is going to be run by consultant neonatologists and in order to enact this exciting development, we are looking to recruit up to five consultant neonatologists as substantive appointees to start from March 2019. Together with the neonatologist already in post, this will enable 24/7 cover of the specialised NICU by consultant neonatologists.
There will continue to be separate consultant teams on call for the PICU, cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) and the Children’s Acute Transport Service (CATS).
These are full-time posts (8 DCC/2 SPA). The successful candidates will have at least two year's specialist neonatal training in recognised training centres, have a CCT/CCST in Neonatology (or be within 6 months at time of interview) or equivalent training with CESR in neonatology.
