Consultant Plastic Surgeon

This is an exciting opportunity for a Consultant Plastic Surgeon to join our expanding plastic and reconstructive general surgical services team. There is no on call requirement associated with this role.
Northland District Health Board provides secondary care services to the northern most part of New Zealand. Our plastic team provide core surgical services from Whangarei Hospital. Some operating sessions are also provided at Kensington hospital on a rotational basis. Whangarei Hospital is the largest hospital in Northland providing secondary care services, supported by three regional hospitals located in Kaitaia, Kawakawa, and Dargaville.
The successful applicant will be part of a friendly and dynamic surgical team that prides itself on clinical excellence and innovation. You will develop strong working relationships with our general surgeons, breast surgeons, head and neck surgeons, orthopaedics, maxillofacial, paediatric, ophthalmology, and oncology teams.
You will have general surgery/plastic registrar and house officer support. The plastic surgical team also has two experienced GP medical officers with post graduate qualifications in skin surgery that perform triage and local anaesthetic surgeries, predominantly skin cancer.
Active research is ongoing and a strong link with Auckland University is well established with a campus for medical intern students and research links.
Opportunity for an attachment with the regional plastic unit is available subject to negotiation and special interests. Plastic surgical development is strongly supported by the New Zealand Association of Plastic Surgeons and the Regional Plastic Unit at Middlemore Hospital in Auckland approximately 3 hrs away by car.
The successful applicant will have the opportunity to join a dynamic private practice with an accredited outpatient theatre for local anaesthesia, and general anaesthetic sessions at Kensington Hospital in Whangarei and Rodney Surgical Centre North Auckland.
Hospital services are supported by a helicopter transfer service requiring regional speciality transfer, for example neurosurgery and cardiothoracic surgery.
Whangarei Hospital has a well-developed intensive care unit to support significant surgeries and the critically ill.
The successful applicant should have comprehensive experience and training in plastic and reconstructive surgery and would ideally be a fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons, and hold, or be eligible to hold Vocational (Specialist) Registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand. Ongoing education is encouraged and supported. Continuing medical education allowance is generous. Multi-disciplinary meetings are held weekly with all specialities being involved which allows for a close collegial working environment. The surgical department has a strong track record with audit and advanced trainee registrar teaching, supervision of house surgeons and medical student teaching. There are a number of active research programs led by Mr Christopher Harmston, Clinical Director of Surgery.
Northland covers an area of 12,600 square kilometres with a population of approximately 170,000. Northland boasts some of the most scenic and exciting coastal areas of New Zealand in a subtropical climate. Popular water recreation areas include the Bay of Islands and Poor Knight Islands Reserves.
