Following the election of a new, forward-thinking Mayor, these are exciting and ambitious times for the London Borough of Newham, one of the youngest and most diverse boroughs in England and Wales. Host to the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and home to the largest urban regeneration site in Europe it boasts a vibrant and thriving culture and community.
The Mayor has set out a bold agenda which has its residents, their education, employment, health and wellbeing, and also safeguarding the most vulnerable and improving outcomes for children and young people at the heart of what we do. There is a new focus and confidence as we look forward to enhance the quality of life of our residents in a borough that includes London City Airport, and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park as just two interesting highlights, opportunities and challenges.
Newham’s new Council agenda comes with a renewed appetite to understand and tackle the complex determinants of health and ensure residents are at the heart of everything the Council does. A review of the core public health function in 2018 identified a number of opportunities to strategically embed public health and increase influence across the Council’s functions.
An exciting chance for an ambitious, visionary and motivational leader with a sound track record of public health achievement and partnership working, this is the chance to drive improvement in the health and well-being of a challenging and diverse city with high aspirations. To realise this ambition, Newham is significantly expanding its specialist public health resource. With the recruitment of three Consultants in Public Health, the new post holder will have a chance to shape the role, and the team to galvanise the administration to improve the health of the population.
