Consultant in Critical Care Medicine and Acute Medicine & Consultant in Critical Care Medicine and Anaesthesia
We are looking for a Consultant in Critical Care Medicine with a base specialty in Anaesthetics or Acute Medicine who shares our ambition and vision to deliver the Best of Care by the Best People and has the drive to take us forward, by ensuring the Trust continues to be the first choice for patients and our staff.
The Critical care department comprises a 9-bedded level 3 ICU, a 10-bedded level 2 surgical HDU (SHDU) and a 6-bedded level 2 medical HDU (MHDU).
We admit over 1900 patients per year and as such are one of the busiest critical care units in the UK. We have a 24/7 outreach service and an active critical care research unit, undertaking multiple national and international trials. We invested in an electronic records system in 2013. We have a long-running post-discharge clinic and have recently increased our capacity and have become more multidisciplinary with dedicated rehab physiotherapists and occupational therapists, in addition to bespoke counselling services.
The ICU and SHDU are currently managed by 9 consultant anaesthetists with an interest in critical care and a respiratory consultant with an interest in critical care. The MHDU is managed by 6 respiratory consultants with an interest in critical care. Each rota provides 24/7 care to our critically unwell patients, supported by dedicated junior Dr rotas. We are a centre for higher ICM training as well as providing rotations for anaesthetists, ACCS trainees, and ED SAS Drs. In addition, our team includes 4 Advanced Critical Care Practitioners.
The anaesthetics department has 28 consultants. In addition, the department has 11 Specialty Doctors, 1 ST7 for chronic pain,1 ST7 regional fellow, 3 ST5s, and 3 ST3s. There are 4 CT2s, 2 CT1s and 2 ACCS trainees. The Department provides anaesthetics services for orthopaedic surgery, paediatric surgery, gynaecological, obstetric, ENT, Vascular, Urology, and Colorectal. In addition the Department also provides anaesthetics services for radiological services including EVAR, MRI and CT scans and cardioversions.
There are 10 main theatres, including dedicated CEPOD theatre and trauma theatre. These theatres all use an electronic theatre record system. There are two obstetric theatres, four day-case unit theatres and two interventional radiology suites.
We have a consultant-led pre-assessment unit and also offer a CPET service for high risk patients. This has recently started offering a prehabilitation service.
The Acute Medicine department currently has 8 consultants. The department covers three main areas; Ambulatory Emergency Care Unit, Acute Admissions Unit and the Short Stay wards. Ambulatory care provides a 7 day, consultant led service supported by registrars and senior house officers. The unit has a treatment room for day procedures such as paracentesis and lumbar puncture. The unit is continuing to expand with plans to move location and improve facilities. The Acute Admissions Unit comprises a 19 bedded unit, with plans to expand to 28 beds, incorporating an assessment area for trollies and chairs. The acute take is split into general medical and frailty patients, with the latter being reviewed by a specialist frailty team. There are two Short Stay wards, with a total of 40 beds allocated to the care of the Acute Medical Consultants. In the May 2018 CQC report, Acute Medicine was specifically mentioned as an outstanding area of practice within the Trust.
