Consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedics
with an interest in Hip & Knee Arthroplasty, Soft Tissue Surgery & Complex Upper and Lower Limb Trauma

We are seeking to recruit an enthusiastic, innovative and progressive Consultant to join our Trauma and Orthopaedics Consultant team. The appointee will cover both sites, City Hospital, Birmingham and Sandwell General Hospital during the on call. Applications are welcomed from candidates with FRCS (or equivalent) who are on the General Medical Council’s Specialist Register in Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgery or who will be within six months of obtaining their CCT at the time of interview. 

For this post - In addition applicants should demonstrate within their application that they are fully trained in the generality of Trauma & orthopaedics, can manage complex upper & lower limb trauma and can perform complex joint revision surgery.

The post will enable the successful applicant to develop sub-specialty surgery interests to complement the existing consultant staff, develop further towards a recognised Black Country Alliance Upper limb services, in conjunction with Russells Hall Hospital, Dudley and Manor Hospital, Walsall.

The appointee will take equal responsibility with existing Consultants for the proper functioning of the clinical service, working with clinical and managerial colleagues towards achieving and maintaining national maximum waiting times and developing clinical pathways in line with the maximum 18 week patient pathway guarantee. There will be a commitment to General Orthopaedic on-call as part of this post, which at present is 1 in 12 split weekend / days (which may change in future)

The Trust is building the 670 bed Midland Metropolitan Hospital which is due to open in October 2022.  This new state of the art acute hospital in Grove Lane, Smethwick will bring together all acute services onto one site.  

The single-site Acute Hospital will benefit from co-located specialist services which will support the new Emergency Department with dedicated imaging facility and Assessment Units.  It will provide state-of-the-art treatment and care for patients from Sandwell and across the region and will become the civic heart of the area and a point of pride for the community.

The Trust is a key partner with the local commissioning group and the local authorities in the Right Care Right Here programme which seeks to deliver a redevelopment of local health services.  The programme includes one of the largest investments in the UK with new facilities in both the acute and community sectors.  Included within this is the new Midland Metropolitan Hospital.
