Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon specialising in Medical Retina
(Peterborough, Hinchingbrooke & Stamford Hospitals)
North West Anglia NHS Foundation Trust is no ordinary NHS hospital. It has a growing ophthalmology department with dynamic clinicians committed to delivering high quality patient care in an integrated and inclusive manner.
The Department of Ophthalmology is unusual for a District General Hospital, being arranged by subspecialty for more than a decade, offering the opportunities of a university hospital while also retaining the freedom of movement to innovate. Examples include shared care community schemes, integration with optometrists, expanded roles for nurses & other non medical health care professionals, and a high level of clinical trials research that has shaped improvements in eye care nationally over many years.
The department has a strong IT infrastructure with an electronic patient record and state of the art diagnostics and has developed innovative ways to meet capacity demands including virtual clinics.
The Medical Retina service can deliver the full range of services including traditional clinics, laser treatments, virtual clinics and an allied health professional delivered intravitreal injection service. Innovative contributions to ophthalmology can enable successful application to the Trust for clinical excellence awards.
Following the merger of Peterborough and Stamford Hospitals with Hinchingbrooke Hospital in Huntingdon last year, there is an opportunity to recruit a full time consultant, who will add expertise to the newly aligned combined Trust, working alongside four other Medical Retina consultant colleagues.
This is an exciting opportunity for a new consultant who specialises in Medical Retina, to join a multidisciplinary team providing optimal care.
The hospitals provide comprehensive ophthalmology care for the Huntingdon, Stamford, Peterborough, Ely and Fenland areas and also receive some referrals from the wider region. This post will have sessions at Peterborough City Hospital and may have sessions at Hinchingbrooke Hospital subject to service requirements. The job also a second on call commitment in the job plan.
The successful applicant will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of the Medical Retina service in the new merged organization. There is also an expectation that the consultant will to contribute to the development of the Emergency eye service (in particular, rapid access for emergency AMD referrals) in terms of training and support to the multidisciplinary team that delivers this service across both Peterborough and Hinchingbrooke Hospitals.
