Applications are invited for the above post at this 641 bed acute hospital serving a local population of approximately 400,000. This appointment will be made in accordance with the terms and conditions of service for the 2003 consultant contract (England), and will include clinical duties split between the Luton and Dunstable University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (L&D) (5.25 PA’s) and Royal Free Hampstead NHS Trust (RFH) (0.75 PA’s). A particular interest in multiple sclerosis would be advantageous. The L&D neurology department is a recognised MS treatment centre and offers a full range of current disease modifying treatments. This post is newly created to support the increased workload and development of the Neurology Department, and the appointee will join a team of six existing consultants, rotating Specialty Trainee and Senior Clinical Fellows in providing a comprehensive Neurology service. In addition to excellent CT and MRI the L&D has a well-established Neurophysiology Department, headed by a Consultant Neurophysiologist on site, and the hospital is a recognised centre for management of hyperacute stroke patients from surrounding areas. At the Royal Free the successful candidates will attend departmental meetings, supervise inpatient care and deliver outpatient care.
The Hospital has always been renowned for its friendly atmosphere and good working relationships. The Trust has University Hospital status with UCL and the Royal Free, which provides an opportunity to strengthen our teaching and R&D programme and brings a more academic environment to the hospital. This department is fully committed to teaching and training both undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors.
The Hospital has excellent access to the surrounding areas with easy access to central London and the rural Chilterns. The rural areas include many attractive villages and towns within easy reach of the Hospital including St Albans and Harpenden. Excellent schools are found nearby. There is also very good access to the Midlands and North by road using the M1 or A1, or by rail to one of the Luton’s three stations. A direct link using the new ‘Busway’ takes passengers from Luton Train station just 7 minutes to reach a stop that is within a short walking distance of the hospital. London Luton Airport is within fifteen minutes of the hospital.
Applicants must be fully registered on the UK General Medical Council’s Specialist Register and have MRCP. Specialist Registrars may apply if within 6 months of CCT.
Residence is required within ten miles by road or thirty minutes travelling time of the Hospital.
Candidates unable for personal reasons to work full-time are also invited to apply.
The appointment will be subject to an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check for the successful candidate prior to commencement.
