Consultant Physician with an interest in Gastroenterology
Applications are invited for a Consultant Physician with an interest in Gastroenterology to join our current team of 6 Consultants. We are a friendly, dynamic, innovative and future focussed department. We will actively support a new colleague that will complement or enhance our existing team with a particular focus on developing new pathways for patients and enhanced training for endoscopists. This post would be suitable for both full time and less than full time working or could be part of a job-share arrangement.
Consultants in Bedford provide comprehensive GI and Liver services to the population of North and Mid Bedfordshire.
Bedford Hospital JAG accreditation report congratulated us on the major refurbishment of endoscopy which saw the hospital invest over £3 million in the service. ‘The standards of care, quality and safety are the highest that we see, and within the new refurbished environment, provide an outstanding, outward facing endoscopy service for the community’ (JAG report). As a result of this expansion and investment, we accommodate therapeutic endoscopy including ERCP within the unit and deep sedation through the support of our anaesthetic colleagues.
We now have an opportunity to further utilise the unit to support endoscopy training. We have a robust training structure in place for medical and non-medically trained endoscopists and wish to extend this further.
Bedford hospital is the bowel cancer screening centre for Bedfordshire with both bowel cancer screening and bowel scope lists undertaken under the leadership of Dr Rory Harvey who is also the Co-Chair for the National Programme for Care for Cancer at NHS England.
There are established networking arrangements with Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge for specialist liver, pancreatobiliary and cancer services.
There is a strong commitment to specialist training and all of our GI Consultants are committed to multi professional education and training of endoscopists.
On a rotational basis, there is commitment to provide senior cover to patients admitted to the gastroenterology ward and to provide specialist in-reach to the rest of the hospital. There would be one in seven on call commitment for GI bleeding/endoscopy and as the trust expands current seven day service, this will develop within the existing programmed activities. There is no acute general medicine on call associated with this post. The successful candidate will show flexibility in their approach to working with the team.
