Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Consultant Haematologist (10 PA post)

The Great Western Hospital is looking to appoint an enthusiastic Consultant Haematologist to join our team. This is a replacement 10PA post at the Great Western Hospital, Swindon.

Any candidate who is unable for personal reasons to work full time will be eligible to be considered for the post. If such a person is appointed, modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis with the Trust in consultation with consultant colleagues.

The post will be based at the Great Western Hospital to join the existing team of six consultants in providing clinical haematology services to Swindon and the surrounding area.

We provide a clinical and laboratory haematology service, managing a full range of haematological conditions to BCSH level 2b. There is a dedicated 10 bed haematology ward and haemato-oncology day care facilities. Our autologous transplant programme is JACIE accredited. Allogeneic transplants are managed in conjunction with University College London Hospitals. We have a keen interest in clinical research and support both NCRN and commercial studies ranging from Phase Ib-III. The department is supported by two specialty registrars (Severn Deanery), a ward based GPVTS post, three speciality doctors, a JACIE Quality Manager, five clinical nurse specialists (one of whom is a full time Transplant Co-ordinator), transfusion and anticoagulant practitioners. There is a GP hospital practitioner who supports the chemotherapy clinic. These latter posts are in the process of being advertised.  The department is also involved in undergraduate teaching. There is a CPA accredited automated combined blood sciences and transfusion laboratory with electronic tracking of blood components to ensure traceability.

The post holder should have a broad base of training in clinical and laboratory haematology and must hold full and specialist registration with a licence to practise with the General Medical Council. Additionally they should be holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT or equivalent by the date of interview. The post holder should have the FRCPath or show evidence of equivalent qualification.

The Great Western Hospital opened in 2002 with well appointed accommodation for staff and patients. The hospital is a Teaching Hospital for undergraduate students from both Oxford and Bristol Universities. The Trust provides acute services to Swindon and the surrounding areas (catchment 350,000) and community services to Wiltshire (catchment 750,000). The Trust is currently planning expansion of its cancer services, which form part of the Thames Valley Strategic Clinical Network. The first phase of this is provision of radiotherapy on the Great Western Hospital site by Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Swindon is an expanding town, which sits adjacent to the M4, at the heart of Southern Central England in the Wiltshire countryside. The Marlborough Downs, the Cotswolds and the towns of Oxford, Bath and Bristol are all within easy reach.
