Consultant in Diabetes/ Endocrinology and General Medicine (10 Programmed Activities)
Applications are invited for this full-time post of a Consultant Physician in Diabetes and Endocrinology with General Internal Medicine (10PAs). This new post has been approved following the expansion of the department and the development of a locality wide Consultant-led Integrated Diabetes Service. In order to deliver this, we are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join a strong, close working team of 5 full time consultants, 2 part time and 3 sessional consultants.
Comprehensive inpatient and outpatient Diabetes and Endocrinology services run across all 3 Trust sites and over the next 6 months we expect to further develop our current portfolio of subspecialty clinics. Since April 2009 all acute medicine has been centralised at Watford General Hospital and together with consultant colleagues you will also provide cover to inpatients as part of a shared rota with colleagues of 1 month in 7. You will contribute to providing inpatient consultation to patients admitted to the Acute Admissions Unit (AAU), specialty referrals within the hospital and provide leadership in the Multi-Disciplinary foot team. Postholde rs will also work collaboratively with Community and Primary care partners in delivering Community diabetes services with the aim of achieving full integration between primary, community and secondary care.
The diabetes team is based in a dedicated diabetes centre at Watford General Hospital. You will be supported by a superb team of 8 Diabetes Specialist Nurses and 2 endocrine specialist nurses across the Trust, with specialist podiatrists and dieticians. The community team comprises a nurse Consultant and an additional 7 diabetes specialist nurses and specialist diabetes dieticians.
The post-holder will take part in the acute on call medical rota on an equal basis with other specialty physicians (currently 1 in 17 weekdays and approximately 1 in 20 weekends).
The successful applicant will have the opportunity to participate in an active departmental research programme and will also be encouraged to take a role in medical education. West Herts Hospitals NHS Trust is a University College London Associated Teaching Hospital and the department has a strong commitment to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.
Watford General Hospital is within a 20 minute train journey from Central London with easy access to all the main academic institutions. All main hospital sites have very good rail links and lie close to the M25 and M1 motorways. There are excellent local schools and the surrounding rural area is extremely attractive.
Applicants must hold MRCP (UK) or equivalent and be on the GMC’s Specialist register (or within 6 months of attaining CCT or equivalent) in G(I)M and Diabetes & Endocrinology at the time of interview.
