Consultant Physician in Acute Medicine & Medical Specialty of choice

(two posts)

Applications are invited for two Consultants in Acute Medicine and medical specialty of choice to work across the Cardiff and Vale UHB, broadening the care of Acute Physicians who are central to plans to improve both pathways and clinical outcomes for medical patients in the Unscheduled Care stream.

The Clinical Board of Medicine is charged with developing innovative processes of clinical care with a focus on earliest patient entry to specialist and condition-specific pathways.  The team of Acute Physicians will support these processes, working with colleagues in the Emergency Unit, ICU, and the full range of medical specialties.  They will also develop and manage an enlarged portfolio of Ambulatory Care options to be available at first clinical contact.

These appointments will take the total number of Acute Physicians in the organisation to 15.5 posts.  Appointees will be trained in Acute Medicine and general medicine sub-specialties.  The range of current sub-specialty interests of Acute Physician colleagues includes diabetes, endocrinology, cardiology, clinical pharmacology & toxicology, stroke medicine, infectious diseases, and renal medicine.  Applications are welcomed from candidates with any sub-specialty interests but, to complement the current group, we are particularly interested to receive applications from those with specialist expertise in respiratory medicine, cardiology, and acute oncology.

As well as Acute Physician sessional commitments, successful candidates will be encouraged to continue their specialty development by integration with colleagues and services in the appropriate directorates.  The 10-session job plans will be flexible but typically include 3 Acute Physician floor sessions and 4 specialty sessions (of which 1 might be in support of ambulatory care).

Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / CESR(CP) at the time of interview.
