Consultant in General Surgery (with Special Interest in Upper GI Surgery)
Applications are invited for the post of consultant in General Surgery. This is a new post and the successful candidate will join a dynamic team of 12 consultants providing General Surgical services in Sandwell and West Birmingham.
Department of general surgery has 7 colorectal surgeons, 2 upper GI surgeons and 2 General Surgeons. The post holder will have a thorough training in all aspects of general surgery and be expected to have special interest in benign upper GI surgery to complement those of the team.
There is a scope for development of bariatric surgical services with the Black Country Alliance. Surgical services group is actively looking at expanding and the introduction of new services and the post holder will be fully supported in the development of new services.
The Trust is one of the largest Teaching Trusts in the UK, employing around 7500 staff, serving a population of over 500,000 and having around 1,000 beds. In partnership with CCGs and Local Authorities the Trust is seeking to deliver an ambitious redevelopment of local health services including new models of care and facilities. The plan includes a new state of the art acute hospital, the Midland Metropolitan Hospital, which is set to be completed in the next few years.
The Trust has a very good reputation for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching with strong links to the University of Birmingham and Health Education West Midlands. The Trust is home to a number of University departments and we are now looking to develop research capacity in a number of specialties in the Trust including Upper GI and General Surgery, so there is likely to be opportunities to become involved in research activities.

Applicants must possess full registration with the GMC, FRCS (or equivalent) and a higher qualification is desirable. It is essential that applicants are either included on the GMC Specialist Register in General Surgery or be within 6 months of receiving their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or equivalent at the time of the interview.
