Glangwili General Hospital, Carmarthen

CONSULTANT DIABETES AND ENDOCRINOLOGY AND GENERAL MEDICINE

The diabetes and endocrinology department at Glangwili General Hospital provides all the specialty outpatient services for the Carmarthen and surrounding area. The post holder will be expected to help develop and deliver all aspects of the sub-specialty service, and part of the role will be the supervision of a general medical ward and inpatient referrals.

You will join a team within Hywel Dda University Health Board with currently 4 WTE substantive consultants in Diabetes and Endocrinology/General Medicine with in-patient beds, 1 part-time Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology and 1 locum Consultant (Acute Medicine) with an interest in Diabetes and Endocrinology.

The successful candidate will be required to work within this local clinical network and support the development of sub-specialty interest to the hospitals and community so designated with responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness.

Within Glangwili General Hospital there is a team of experienced diabetes nurses and their support will make up a significant portion of the role. Junior doctor support is provided by the team of 1 FP1, 1FP2, 1 CT, and 1 middle grade.

We are in particular looking for candidates to take forward hospital based diabetes services (inpatients, antenatal, insulin pumps, complicated renal and foot disease and young person’s diabetes) and also support community delivered diabetic care.

Supervision of junior staff will be part of the role as well as mentoring medical students from both Swansea and Cardiff Medical Schools.

Many of the current physicians’ have honorary roles within the post graduate medical school at Swansea University and the successful candidate would be encouraged to do the same.

As well as the medical school links the department has strong research record with two of the current consultants previously holding Welsh Government funded Research Fellowships with portfolio registered research projects and co-supervision of both clinical and non-clinical higher degree students.

Opportunities for a successful candidate to develop specific research interests will also be apparent.
