Director Public Health
Director Public Health (DPH)
We’ve got big plans and high hopes for Bristol. It’s a city of ground-breaking innovation – brimming with talented people and bright ideas. As a modern and forward thinking Council we’re looking for ambitious and skilled leaders to join our corporate team. As Director of Public Health you will be the statutory officer providing leadership across the whole public health and social care system – working to reduce inequalities and improve health outcomes across our City and communities.
Creating a healthy Bristol is essential to improving the wellbeing and life chances of everyone in the city. Reporting to the Executive Director (Adults, Children and Education) you will be well placed to influence a range of strategies and policies as the statutory DPH, including the health component of the City Plan, the work of the Health & Wellbeing Board and our response to any public health emergency.
Your remit is broad and includes responsibility for our Joint Strategic Needs Analysis, community safety and commissioning of sports activities. Developing appropriate city-wide plans and strategies, you will ensure that the impact on health is considered in every council policy. This will involve you in significant partnership work across the council as well as external stakeholders such as our community of schools and businesses, enabling you to advise on and influence policies which will improve key issues such as obesity and air quality.
To fulfil this statutory role, you will need to demonstrate a record of continuous professional development with the Faculty of Public Health. You will be registered with the GMC or GDC Specialist Register or the UK Public Health Register for Public Health Specialists, with a licence to practice in public health medicine or dental public health. Alternatively, you’ll have equivalent training and experience of practising public health medicine. More than this, you will have the ambition and drive to create a proactive and creative approach to improving health outcomes and the ability to inspire others to do the same.
This is an outstanding opportunity to have a real impact on public health in one of the UK’s most vibrant and successful cities.
