Dear Prospective Candidate

Have you ever considered working in one of Scotland’s most attractive NHS Island Boards? NHS Orkney is working hard to be the best remote and rural health care provider in the UK – do you want to help us achieve our ambition?

In common with other NHS Boards in Scotland, NHS Orkney is required to provide routine and urgent care whilst at the same time have the infrastructure to be able to respond to life threatening emergencies and in other situations resuscitate, support and care for patients of all ages whilst we wait for emergency retrieval services to transport people to a more appropriate care setting.

NHS Orkney is looking for two Consultant Surgeons to join its existing talented pool of Consultants as we transform the healthcare landscape of this stunning archipelago. Our new hospital and healthcare facility with state of the art diagnostics will open in 2019. This new facility will have 49 inpatient beds with purpose built emergency, high dependency, diagnostic and theatre facilities. There will be increased technical connectivity to support videoconferencing and telemedicine enabled care.

These posts require a certain type of doctor - a generalist who is happy to utilize digital technologies to involve clinical colleagues from out with the organisation to inform and support decision making when required. Can you see yourself in this role? There is a requirement for a broad spectrum of clinical skills which for many are greater than those covered by specialty training.

To help, we have agreed with the Post Graduate Deanery to offer a bespoke training programme to assist consultants to gain the skills required to competently fulfil this role. Opportunities to spend time working in NHS Grampian and/or NHS Highland together with access to an attractive CPD package will help you maintain your skills. In return you can expect a person specific contract to meet both your own and NHS Orkney’s needs. For some staff, living in Orkney permanently is not an option and they have opted for a two week time on island and two week off island; accommodation for those entering into this type of contractual arrangement is available.

For others who wish to work as volunteers overseas we are willing to consider a partnership to accommodate your placements. Our ability to offer flexibility makes NHS Orkney an attractive employer. We can and will work with you to meet your needs. If you are interested, why not get in touch and spend time with us to sample Orkney life and see firsthand our clinical setting and the many opportunities for clinicians working in a remote and rural context.

In return, we can arrange a 3 day visit to support you to experience island life. For those interested in working with us in NHS Orkney, Orkney lies off the northern coast of Scotland, between John O’Groats and the Shetland Isles.

The total population is approximately 22,000 with most people living on the Mainland, the largest Island on the Archipelago of Orkney. Kirkwall, the capital, with a population of 7,500, is the administrative centre of Orkney with a good mix of shops, supermarkets and businesses.

Access to the islands is easy. Kirkwall has several flights a day (just under 1 hour) connecting to the Scottish Mainland, and with high speed broadband available on the islands, friends and family are just a click away. Homes are very affordable - what might you get for £200,000 in London, Edinburgh, Glasgow or Leeds? For that sort of money, you get 4 bedroom detached homes in the most sought after locations in Kirkwall and the best bit is there being very little traffic anywhere.

But don’t take our word for it - come and see for yourself! Please feel free to visit the island and the Balfour Hospital where you will find a very warm welcome.
