An exciting opportunity has arisen to appoint two Consultant Nephrologists to join our friendly, dedicated team based at University Hospital of Wales (UHW), Cardiff.

Renal services in South East Wales are centred in the Nephrology & Transplant Directorate at UHW with outreach services in Newport, Pontypool, Abergavenny, Ebbw Vale, Merthyr Tydfil and Llantrisant, covering a population of approximately 1.2 million. We deliver renal replacement therapy to approximately 600 haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients across the region.  This includes an active Home Haemodialysis programme, already one of the largest in the United Kingdom which we intend to develop further. There is a 1 in 10 commitment to the nephrology on-call rota at UHW.

The Transplant Programme covers a catchment population of approximately 1.8 million in the southern half of Wales.  110 patients received a kidney, kidney pancreas or pancreas transplant during the last year.  We have a well-established ABOi programme and the HLAi programme is expanding.  We also have an active Pancreas Transplant Programme.  The DCD programme is one of the busiest in the country.  There is a dedicated 20-bed purpose-built facility for Transplantation on the UHW site.

The Institute of Nephrology based at UHW is internationally recognised for its strong research pedigree and the successful candidate will be encouraged to contribute to the ongoing research programme.  In addition, there may be opportunities to develop new projects in alignment with the current strategy.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.  The appointees will be expected to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate training and teaching organised by Cardiff University’s School of Medicine.

Applicants should either be on the Specialist Register or be a Specialist Registrar within six months of their expected date of receipt of a CCT / CESR(CP) at the time of interview.
