Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust are recruiting to two newly created General Adult Consultant Psychiatrist Posts based within Camden. The Post holders will join a CQC rated 'good' Trust and will able to develop this Service from the ground up.

The Camden Primary Care Mental Health Service is a newly commissioned service provided by Camden and Islington Foundation Trust in conjunction with Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust, Mind, Camden Local Authority and Hillside Clubhouse. The service is a new initiative and has been developed in response to 5YFV, GP and commissioner and service user feedback and is in line with C&I Trust clinical strategy to enhance mental health expertise and support of primary care.

The Camden Primary Care mental health service will consist of 4 locality based teams across the 4 geographically aligned neighbourhoods in Camden (NW5, NW3, Central and South localities) and each neighbourhood will be aligned to approximately 6-8 GP practices.

The aim of the Camden Primary Care Mental Health Service is to increase the number of people whose mental health support is appropriately managed within primary care. The service will provide support to GPs in managing patients with complex mental health difficulties, who may have long term physical health conditions, and/or be frequent users of GP or A&E and other resources. Patients may have been previously known to secondary services and may no longer reach their criteria or may not be willing to engage.

The aim is to enhance the provision of mental health care at a primary care level, in conjunction with GPs and other practice staff, and to enhance the capability of primary care staff to manage mental health conditions. One of the longer term aims is for the service to facilitate the step down of stable secondary care mental health clients (clusters 11 and 5-8) back to primary care. The service does not offer traditional case management and will carry only a small caseload whilst clients are receiving interventions with the service. This is in order to maintain capacity of the service to respond quickly to GP referrals.

The post-holders will work as part of a multidisciplinary team embedded in local GP practices, working directly with and as part of the primary care teams, with the aim of increasing the skill and confidence of GPs and other primary care staff to manage patients with mental health conditions in primary care. This will be achieved through a combination of consultation, liaison and advice to GPs, mental health assessments and reviews of clients and by developing collaborative approaches to case management through co-working and training. Much of the clinical work will be through assisting GPs and primary care staff in diagnosis, case formulation, risk assessment, management plans and self-help plans which are co-produced with the patient. More detailed clinical assessments will be offered where they are seen as essential to drawing up a formulation.
