Consultant in Critical Care
We are looking for four Consultants to join us in the department of Anaesthesia and Critical Care at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS trust. 1 post has arisen due to retirement while 3 have been created to expand our existing critical care consultant team. Successful applicants will join an enthusiastic team of 13 committed and respected consultants currently providing critical care services on two acute sites. There are a further 26 consultants providing a separate general anaesthetic, chronic pain and on-call service.
At present each unit has 16 beds used flexibly to provide a combination of level 3 and level 2 care, depending on the needs of the service. There are two tiers of rotational trainee cover for both units and supernumerary advanced trainees. Plans have been approved to have additional ACCP cover from November 2018 onwards.
The Trust’s plan includes a new state of the art acute hospital, the Midland Metropolitan Hospital, which is set to be completed in the next few years. The new hospital, sited on Grove Lane, Smethwick will bring all acute services onto one, purpose-built site. This will include a 30-bed critical care unit and medical, surgical and paediatric high dependency units. It will provide state-of-the-art treatment and care for patients from Sandwell and across the region and will become the civic heart of the area and a point of pride for the community.
The Trust is a key partner with the local commissioning group and the local authorities in the Right Care Right Here programme which seeks to deliver a redevelopment of local health services. The programme includes one of the largest investments in the UK with new facilities in both the acute and community sectors.
All consultants within the department work at both the City & Sandwell sites. The appointee will be expected to work flexibly at the 2 locations depending on the needs of the service and appointees’ sub-speciality interests. Initially posts are for 10PAs with additional sessions available by mutual agreement.
The applicant must be on the GMC specialist register or, if currently in training, must be eligible to be on the specialist register for anaesthesia and intensive care within six months of the interview date. In addition to the clinical responsibilities the department is looking for enthusiastic candidates who will bring new skills, knowledge and techniques to the department. It is essential that Consultants joining the department are flexible, forward-looking and committed.
Informal visits and enquiries are welcomed. If you would like to discuss the posts in more detail please contact Dr Jay Susarla, Clinical Director or Dr Nick Sherwood, Specialty Lead for Critical Care on 0121 507 4343/3425/5603.
Any candidate who, for personal reasons, is unable to work whole-time is eligible to be considered for the post.
